Hi,
Seen a R reg 306, 5 door, 63K miles, diesel for sale in my local paper.
What should I check for when I go to view?
Are the non-turbo engines prone to breaking their con-rods as in HJ's car-by-car reviews?
Any advice will be gratefully received.
Regards, Ian

Cam belt change date? I think it's a 70k schedule, but at 9 years old it would be wise to change it asap.

Cooling is sometimes an issue on these XUD diesels. Check the head gasket is OK and there's plenty of coolant. Sometimes get airlocks if it's not been properly bled.
Agree on the cambelt. If there's no evidence of it being done, do it quick!

Basically, enough paperwork to suggest that the car has been looked after - which is proper oil & filter, coolant and brake fluid changes. The cambelt is likely to be original, so if it is, get it changed. If the coolant is original, treat the car with suspicion. If you buy, a good dose of diesel conditioner may work wonders.

Thanks for the info, read that the Bosch injector pump is better than the Lucas type, does anyone know which might be fitted and how I could tell?
|
Bosch pump will last upwards of 300k miles, and happily run on straight veg oil. Lucas pumps begin to complain at 150k miles, and don't like runnning on SVO. easy way to tell - follow the cold start cable running from the thermostat housing. If it goes to the back of the pump it's a Bosch, to the front and it's a Lucas. Of course by 97 it might have ECU control, when the fast idle will be controlled by vacuum, but I'd imagine the positions will be the same - look out for a cable operated by a vacuum solenoid instead.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

if you want my advise ib33 take note of the engine numbers hj has posted and stear clear if the car you are interested in is one of these, also get down and get under the front of the car and make sure the radiator isnt leaking, they are prone to this and the time before your dash light comes on and you have stopped is usually too long to save the engine unless you are in town.
Apart from that all the usual stuff, but bear in mind the car is still 9 years old.
