M6 J21A -> M62 - borasport20
There have been 'roadworks' at this junction, where the M6 southbound, joins the M62 Eastbound, for six weeks or so until recently.

All that appears to have changed is that whereas the sliproad was two lanes for all of its length, new markings have been added to reduced it to a single lane before it joins the M62

Sursprise, surprise, it doesn't seem to have made any difference whatsoever. What was the point ?

They've altered the layout of the joining slip road too. It's now a lot longer and has moved slightly to the left, presumably to avoid traffic joining the M62 immediately after coming round the curve. The entire jobby as you approach the curve has been resurfaced as well.

They've done a far better job coming the other way, leaving the M62 for the M6. Clear markings that, although causing a little confusion at the moment, direct traffic sensibly and will reduce tailbacks.

On the same subject, the changes at the end of the M57 are a godsend. Why didn't they build the little extra bit of road in the first place?!

They actually finished this section then?

It's about a month since I last used Switch Island.

It isn't as bad now as it was a few months ago. Although a lot of that depends on what time you go there!

Yep, it opened on March 17th. Coming off the M57 and heading toward the A59 is a doddle now, although it feels very weird positioning yourself in lane 3 when coming to the end of the motorway, espcially as it used to merge into lane 2...

That bit should work, and work well - there is some inate 'sense' to it, but in the other direction, I can't see how it is going to make any difference.

And then we're going to get traffic lights at the end of more slip roads - I really dont know how that works. Most days if I join the M6 at J25, there are 3 lanes of near-standing traffic on the motorway - I'm baffled as to what difference having traffic lights at the far end of the sliproad will make.

I've noticed them too Mike - still covered up.

Surely for them to work, traffic lights would need to be on the motorways too! Now that would be interesting.

I've noticed traffic lights springing up at the bottom of sliproads too. There's a set at the bottom of J18 north on the M6. What's the point if there aren't any on the main carriage way too?

Most of the congestion is caused by too many vehicles entering the motorway at the same time. This quickly causes lane 1 to slow, forcing vehicles into lane 2 which then slows, and then into lane 3, which slows. It also causes a tailback on the slip road.

The idea is to limit the number of vehicles joining the motorway, to a set number of vehicles depending upon the flow on the main carriage way. This means that the motorway doesn't slow in the same way, and counter-intuitively it is alleged that the vehicles joining from the slip road also have a reduced journey time as they are not caught up in a snarl up.

Not sure if it works.

Why not just set off earlier and miss the traffic.
M6 J21A -> M62 - Wee Willie Winkie
I set off at 6.30am to try to avoid the traffic. Mostly I still catch quite a bit of traffic around the junction borasport refers to.

I ain't setting off any earlier than that.
