Quick question for the Geordies in here.
When I was last in Newcastle (April 05) the High Level Bridge was closed to vehicles due refurbishement. Is it now open again?
IIRC hotel staff were uncertain as to whether the plans were to reduce it to pedestrian/PSV use only

It was not open last weekend, which was last time I was back in God's own country.

Funny sense of humour that god fella.

We have a great tradition here in the North East of closing important road bridges for ridiculous time spans. Sunderland are the renowned experts for doing this but Newvcastle come a close second. This leads to huge traffic congestion at peak times.
Looks like the high level bridge won't open for quite a long time yet.

Thanks guys - running a repeat of the event that saw me there last year.
This time I'll mention HLB closure in the delegate briefing instead of reccommending it as the best crossing point for getting to our conference venue!!

Hi,
When it reopens it will be a single direction bus only bridge. The bridge has already seen the rail track reduced to one track.
Newcastle is in a mess, as the Quayside is also closed due to a fire in the old warehouse next to the Copthorne Hotel.
Best Regards
Baz
