Anyone ever had a dealer take in a classic car as trade in?

Just wondering if anyone ever has? Clearly it's not a common thing to do.

Also depends on the what the classic is, anyone got any examples?

I was once offered a tidy MGB as PX, the problem being all our stuff went straight to auction - no idea what one would go for at general auction so told him that we couldn't take it.

Too much hassle for a main dealer.

Hi,

If its not in the Glass Guide it will confuse them! Is it a Triumph, needed loads of work? I fancy a challenge!

I would try Ebay, with a Good ad full of high quality pictures.

I tried to P/X a VW type 2 camper for a modern camper van dealers tended not to be able to value it & frankly could not be bothered
I have a funny tale related to this. A dealer friend was selling a old 405 estate for about £800, a punter wanted to trade a rough morris minor traveller. It had about a week on the MOT My friend could see it needed work so he advised the punter to wash & clean it and put it the local auction the next night, yes thats right punter got £750 for it! and came and purchased the 405! My mate was gutted, to have been out done as the punter was only after £150 for as a P/X!

Works both ways though, you take in a "classic" and find its full of plaster of paris and 3x2 what do you do then?
you keep to what you know and offer peanuts, if it does £750 with no help goodo, if it gets no bid you weigh it in for £50 and move on.

I say my man, want to buy one of your Laguna autos, got this old motor in the barn, any chance of a part exchange?

What's the old motor sir?

Dunno, pretty old, says Bugatti on the front, any chance?

(Prolonged tooth-sucking noise)

Oh well all right sir, we'll take it if you insist, how many Lagunas were you thinking of exactly?

Just one.

Well sir, what about the other 44? Will you take cash?

A friend looked at trading in an old Mini for a new Clio.

Was offered £400 for it. Sold it privately for £2,000. So yes, it *is* possible with some dealers at least to trade a classic but don't expect to get anything like what an "enthusiast" (there's an enthusiast born every minute) would pay for it.

I've known two people trade classics for moderns.
First was quite a few years ago & was a Fiat Samantha Vignale for a Dolomite Sprint which was about 18 months old at the time & the guty took details put it round the specialist & offered big money for it.
Second was a couple of years ago cuz got rid of Triumph 2000 Mk2 for a Focus at Carland Lakeside & got a decent trade in again the guy touted it around the classic trade.

My Brother traded his 77 Ferarri GT4 against a 4 Y/O TVR Chimera but the dealer made plenty of enquiries with other specialist dealers before selling it on imediatly
