I was looking at a Alfa 166 on E bay and says it is CatD due to a machanical problem ,can this be correct?

An alfa 166 thats been written off? personally i would take some rather large, rather fast steps in the opposite direction but if you must then here are the details.
Cat A is major damage to vehicle possibly including loss of life - car is crushed and recycled.
Cat B is severe damage to vehicle but ok to be used for parts at a breakers. Will never be allowed to return to the road.
Cat C is damaged but able to be returned to the road. For some reason insurers chose not to repair. Requires VIC check before it can be returned to the road.
Cat D is light damage but insurance again chose not to repair. Can also be stolen recovered vehicles where the insurer had paid out prior to the car being found. VIC check not required.
I would want to know more about the vehicle and also inspect it before even thinking about bidding on such a thing.

So the mechanical problem could be that the twocers drove it flat out in first untill bits melted ?

Yes if they stole it and then blew the engine it would be an insurance claim and quite likely to result being a write off.
