I have now read a number of reports on Toyota VVTi engines suddenly suffering from high oil consumption.
Is this a characteristic of the VVTi engine design or just 1.6's.
Can any help with experience or knowledge please ?

I read this myself somewhere,but cannot remember where.
My wife has a Yaris so I am a bit concerned.
The gist of the report on increased oil consumption was that engines that are not taken over 4000rpm on a regular basis could suffer from excessive oil consumption.
There must be a mechanical reason for this but I don't know what it could be.

Check the Toyota owners forum. There was a problem with vvt-i 1.6 and 1.8 engines that was fixed by end of 2002. There is an unpublicised extended warranty (normal conditions apply) that covers this problem up to five years.Toyota's normal response is to monitor oil consumption and if it exceeds 1 litre per 600 miles (I think) you get a new short engine. Some dealers are more cooperative than others by all reports.

Thanks guys - I ask the question because my wife has 1.4 vvti Corolla that will soon be out of warranty so I just wanted to check if I should be doing something about it.
