New Jetta - stevied
Anyone driven a VW Jetta 2.0T Fsi, the 200BHP version? Am thinking of getting one on our company scheme (it's a bargain).

Is the MPG OK or is it a lot worse than the advertised 35?
New Jetta - Stuartli
I wouldn't even think about it.

The car would already be on my drive...:-)

I take it you're a fan then? Have you actually driven one Stuart?
New Jetta - Stuartli
No, not yet.

But my Bora is the third VW on the run in the last 14 years...:-)

See, these tests make me think the diesel's the one to go for, fast AND sensible! BUT, I've had 4 diesels in a row, it may be time to get a revvy engine again.. on the other hand can't cope with less than 30MPG!

Help...
New Jetta - stevied
Messrs John and Stuart, I thank you!

Order to be placed on Monday. Let's see if I can cope with a redline of more than 4500! : )

Cheers chaps.
New Jetta - Stuartli
Enjoy!

I saw one in black yesterday. 06 plate. Spotless.

I want one. Shame about the pretty boring interior though. I could probably live with it if the car looked as good on the drive as it did on the side of the road.

Just before you do read the Sunday Times Jeremy Clarkson article on the Jetta - you may not care for what he has to say about the car (He thinks it is the most boring car in the world) - but it would be a shame for you to think the same when it is too late and you have ordered.

I hope you enjoy it if you do go for it though.
New Jetta - machika
I don't think Clarkson's opinions about ordinary cars are totally relevant. He inhabits a different world to most folk who drive cars and his opinions are clouded by the experience of driving cars that most of us will never get in.
New Jetta - Adam {P}
Much as it pains me to do so, I'm in agreement with machika ;-)

Clarkson seems to review every car now as though it's a competition between Car A - costing £11,000 and Car B - costing £111,000.

Adam, it gives me absolutely no pleasure to cause you so much pain.

I've nothing against J.C. He's a nice bloke and fronts a very entertaining programme loosely associated with motoring matters but nothing to do with the real world - that would be boring, apparently.

I wouldn't take anything he says about bread and butter cars seriously, at all. Would anyone?

My mate had a new VW Jetta 'Sport' on a 24 hour test drive this week. I briefly saw the car and thought that it looked quite smart in black but a bit bland and 'large' at the same time.

I've got the new Golf and would much rather have this but then I don't need to carry around a massive boot space which would never be used. I imagine the longer wheelbase of the saloon would confer a better, less choppy ride though.
New Jetta - Pat L
I had a test drive in a Jetta and a Passat yesterday. I found the Jetta 'ok' rather than good - the ride was a bit joggly at low speeds, there was a slight lag between clog down and something happening, and the steering felt a bit lifeless and numb. The design of the centre console is strange, with sort of 'handles' at the sides.

The Passat was much better - roomier, more comfrotable and better steering feel. Very relaxed cruising, 2000rpm at 70mph in 6th gear. Nicely made, though interior is not quite up to Audi standards (but then it's about 3k cheaper than equivalent A4). However, that electronic starter and handbrake will take a bit of getting used to! Very tempted.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that both were 2.0tdi models.

The Jetta is an Escort class range, the Passat slots into the Mondeo environment.

I noticed that the Jetta list prices were very similar, model for model, to the new Passat when launched last year (I have last year's brochure). On that basis I though the Jetta was overpriced.

Looking at the VW website now I see that they have increased the list prices on the Passat - presume to make the Jetta look better value...
New Jetta - Stuartli
IIRC the new Jetta was launched in the UK earlier this year - in fact HJ's road test was posted on February 25th:

Here's what the Americans think about it by the way (where the saloon outsells the Golf by three to one):

Well I've ordered my Jetta, regardless of Mr Clarkson! In fact, almost because of him.. and also reading HJ's comments about the invisible 16V one from years ago! I am a big fan of Q-cars....

Anecdotal evidence suggests that people are getting more MPG from the Jetta than the Golf GTi so I'll stay hopeful!

I read a review of the Octavia with this engine just after I typed about the GTi fuel useage. On test the Octavia managed 34 mpg - so it looks like 30+ is achievable.
New Jetta - type's'
Enjoy the car - I am not a fan of Clarkson either but would have liked you to test drive it and not come to the same conclusion he did - clearly you did and felt different.
Many miles of happy motoring Stevied.
New Jetta - JohnM{P}
I'd expect the Jetta to get better mpg as generally the saloon notchback shape has a lower drag coefficient than the comparable hatchback or estate.

I had a 2.0FSi Golf (not 200bhp) as a courtesy car - great fun, but the optional large wheels kicked up a real din. The ride was stiffer than my cooking 105bhp TDi, but I wouldn't have described it as 'jiggly'.

Enjoy...!

Hence generally poor VFM.

I saw a few Jettas in the US last fall, I thought the frontal styling looked a bit busy, rather clumsy, though from the side and rear it is a great looking car, if it has similar dynamics to a Golf GTi then the 2.0T should be a good drive.

It depends what you want.

You can buy Australian Shiraz for £4 or £5 a bottle upwards in Tesco but my local independent wine shop owner's offerings, whilst a little more pricey, are in a superior league altogether.

I really dont think the analogy works however I take the point re wine, I dont think you can beat a good Rioja myself.

The point is though that VW's are "a little more pricey" and are certainly not "in a superior league altogether" hence are generally good cars though rather poor VFM.

I don't know about your local independent wine shops offerings but, as with many things in life, price isn't always a guide to quality. It's nothing to do with cars, I know, but Aussie wine is usually good value for money and has some very good stuff in the £5 to £10 range.
New Jetta - Stuartli
I have a Bentley owning friend who goes several price steps better even than the independent wine shop owner's offerings.

These wines are in an even more superior league as I know well from regular gatherings at his home...:-)

I've also spent a great deal of time in many of the world's greatest hotels and restaurants and the same applies.

Tesco offers good value but you can't beat the real thing.

Been out of the office and got back to these amusing replies!

Stuartli, I have test driven it now, and I like it, it's a fun Q-car!

Re: Bentleys, I may open another thread on that... I have a fair bit of experience and opinions in that field...

Have a good weekend Backroomers!
