My friend Adam at work is a bit of a boy racer and is looking for a car to have some fun in. He's got his heart set on a Renault 5 turbo but I think he could get something more solid & safer for the 3k he has.
His criteria is:
3k maximum spend
Insurance group no more than 15
Fast & fun
I came up with the following, some are closer matches than others:
* Old BMW 325 / 328 (e36 shape)
* Ricer i.e. 3000GT, GTO, MR2, RX7 (although most too much on insurance)
* Mark 1 or 2 Golf GTI
Can anyone else help with this very serious problem!!??
Thanks

Golf Mk3 VR6 roughly group 16.
Golf Mk3 16v almost as good as a VR6.
3k will get a good model. The VR6 engine will last for ever so long as the timing chains / tensioners are changed every 80-90k

nissan 300 zx
mitsubushi 3000 gt
maybe an FTO and GTO (mitubushi)
vr6 corrado
g60 corrado

Lexus GS? Not your typical boy racer car, granted, but still :)

Not much to bring to the suggestion list other than;
I'd avoid FTO's, GTO's etc. You're looking at ins group 19+
Lexus GS - Wonderful fantastic cars bought by the discerning gentleman. Sadly they're group 17 though.
"Adam" isn't me ;-)

Ah you're right, it's the series 2 model that's group 15, and you won't get one of those for 3k.
Sorry...
That considered, I'd go for the 325i as long as 6-figure mileages aren't a problem (shouldn't be, with servicing). The 328i is group 16.

Alfa 145 Cloverleaf.
Should get a good one for a fair bit less than £3k, insurance group 14.

Monde....sorry, go for a Beemer. Rear wheel drive any day for a sporting drve.

Honda Civic VTi, 1994-on Toyota Celica GT (not GT4, think theyre grp 16, Nissan Pulsar/Sunny GTR.

Thanks for your replies everyone - Adam just spent £1000 on a new DJ mixer at the weekend (in true boy racer style) and is now down to his last £1800!!!
What do you think of the old (95-00) shape A4 (1.8's and 2.6's) - any experiences to share good / bad (beyond HJ's car-by-car breakdown?)

My Dad used to have an M-reg 1.8, and it was a good car but underpowered IMO. Fine for motorway cruising but acceleration nothing to get excited about. Drove a 2.6 on a test drive once and it didnt feel as quick as I expected it to be but could have been deceptive and it was only a short drive, also that particular car was a bit of a shed. (Slow compared with my Pug 405 Mi16).
If he can stretch to a 2.4 30v they've got 15bhp more than a 2.6 and a bit quicker but still group 15 AFAIK.
