I wonder if we take as much care selecting our partner as we do selecting our cars. For example what level of spec. did you look for in your partner. Did you go for the eco version or the lux edition. Did you shy clear of the sports version- better grip but maybe arriving at you destination a little early--and go for the comfort spec. What about V5 to find out his/her original colour, actual age and number of previous owners? Did he/she come with a hands free kit. Has the bodywork lasted? It's a minefield..........

Did you ask to see a full service history?

If my cars were even 5% as beautiful and reliable and as much fun as SWMBO, I'd be a very happy man.

You must have one of those foreign imports then!

Similar process really
test drove a few till I found one I really liked & chose that one.
I seem to remember the registration process was a bit expensive.
But never let me down in nearly 25 years and still looks as good as ever - definitely approaching classic status.
Motoring connection - got the Commer from the same supplier (her dad) still have both.

Needs regular servicing but thats OK and it does not take too long!

Not being in this situation yet is there not a large cost to run for that length of time???

Temporarily not a student, where did the time go???

Not as much as it costs to keep trading them in every 3 years or so.
|
From memory the original deposit was reasonable 12/6p from memory (£0.625 for those who do not understand real money).
However, the running costs over the last 35 years have been significant and somewhere along the line another 3 hangers-on appeared and they were costly as well up until they were 22/23.
My cars from then are pretty well gone so my wife must be made from better stuff. Although I noted my 1972 MGBGT was still being roadtaxed and had changed from Teal Blue to Black in the last 33 years

Mine was 7s 6d and my salary for the rest of my life...:-(
The church actually paid the 7s 6d - perhaps the vicar believed SWMBO had been on the shelf too long...:-)

The costs are mainly the (in our case 3) expensive by products!
There is even a financial positive in allowing the partner to be used by the local education authority to teach their children. But bear in mind this causes substantial extra wear and tear on the nervous system.

I bought a fairly young model back in 1980 but I was too young to handle the power. Sadly I had to let her go. She's had a couple of owners since and the unfortunately last keeper really didn't take proper care of her.
At an auction (house party) 3 years ago now, I saw her there, still gleaming, still with her original registration (now a classic plate with no tax). I couldn't resist and snapped her up. We've been happy ever since and she always starts on the button, purrs like a kitten, still corners well and looks like she still has another 250k miles left in her!
|
and looks like she still has another 250k miles left in her!
and sounds like she'll go all the way too! :-)

After much test driving,I thought I had chosen the model to last a lifetime.Unfortunately after developing seriously annoying faults,at great expense I had to get rid of her.The younger model I now enjoy, puts a beaming smile on my face every day. This one will last a lifetime(must be a Lexus model perhaps?)

The term built for comfort not for speed always fondly reminds me of a ex girlfriend
Also a quote from Blackadder could apply to cars too. Rik Mayal is describing how to look after a areoplane
"treat your kite like you treat you woman, get in her 8 times a day & take her to heaven & back"..... Thats me baned!
|
Got mine in the days before plastic bumpers. Had to SORN her a couple of times but generally very reliable. Don't think I'll be putting her up for sale though, I've become quite attached to the old thing!

'LOVE'
An obsessive delusion that is cured by marriage
or in the case of a car 'ownership'
|
Classic cars can be a source of great comfort, inspiration and support during those times of difficulties which you would not be suffering but for the fact that you had a classic car.
|
|
I thought love was an invention by bank managers to make you go overdrawn !!

|
|
I have heard that having a weekend play thing hidden in the garage often causes the main one to misbehave!!!
|
Oh I dont know, my wife quite likes me playing with her Clio at the weekend.
|
Good thread guys and would love to contribute - but SWMBO often reads HJ over my shoulder - suffice it to say that she is a beautifully polished and much loved classic - and she cooks much better than the average car!

Head East. Just as I was looking to replace the unfaithful English model, I found a place in Prague where you could try out various types for £70 an hour (including Jacuzzi). Returned many times to that show room, but eventually found the perfect Hot Hatch in Poland.
Occasionally hear down the grapevine that the old English model is suffering in the hands of an inexperienced new owner and has developed a missfire.
|
But unfaithful English models are so expensive to scrap arn't they - actually putting her slowly through a car crusher could be fun!

It's children rather than partners that are the bad bargain:
- 9-month waiting list
- only two models, and you don't get to choose
- no choice of colour either
- no warranty (except a guarantee of trouble to come....
And yet we had 4 and still love them. Whatever anyone may say about the logic of choosing one's car, children defy most rules of logic. Cats (we have 3) defy ALL rules of logic.
|
Avant >>no choice of colour either
You hope........................
|
True, but just remember that first test drive.
|
If you're talking about partners of the female variety...
You could get a butler to do an equally good job of cooking / cleaning / washing / ironing (and he'd probably cost less)...
which only leaves one thing...
so assuming you're not wanting assistance in gestating a kit-car :
If I had my time over, I'd almost certainly not bother having a car of my own - I'd just rent whatever model took my fancy, as and when needed.
A *lot* less hassle.
