My choice would be a 306 turbo diesel, excellent fuel economy & quick into the bargain. Plus when you come to sell it again, you will possibly get a fair chunk of your money back. Find one with FSH & you will be laughing.

personal recomendation would be a small Jap car. Nissan Micra for example, or something like that.
I bought a Micra shape 1993 last year for 550, with 150k miles, and it was, and still is superb. It has literally nothing wrong with it, it starts first time every time, even after a week or 2 on stop. I love it becuase all the electrics, switches, and mechanics work. It's got decent build quality, and despite being really basic, is comfy and doesn't squeak. The engine is a real gem as well, even though it's only the 998cc. It's a cracking designed car.
I've also had Peugeots, and while they perform engine wise, the rest of the car can be pretty poor.

Yeah, agree, Micras are probably the most girlie car out there (well these or Suzuki Vitaras). I'd say a Honda Civic, 1991-1995 3 dr, or 1995-on 5 door.

Someone will be along in a mo with the usual tedious response of Mondeo (yawn).

Old citroen xantia? My dad sold his for about £750 a couple of years ago. Anything small is girly and if you only have £1k to spend then an old executive type car is much better value for money. Work out the costs of fuel vs insurance costs vs value for money as there will be a trade off between higher insurance and higher fuel costs at some point up the scale with the initial car price for the better value executive type cars.

The 1.4 205 sr models are great. Cheap to buy, cheapish for insurance and still got some poke as they weigh nothing. An old golf that isn't the gti or an old corrado might be another possibility. Ditto ancient audi 100.

The cheap car you look for is always in demand :-)

i was thinking that also teabelly. surely there comes a point when, to insure anything under a £1K will come to around £150 third party.
my BMW 320 cab was £20K last year, its worth around £17.5K now, so i have lost £2.5K.
yes i know, but its our 1 thing we enjoy. and we are keeping it, so we can share on a weekly basis.
the insurance is only £390 fully comp.
so on anything under £1K i could be paying around ?? dunno.
going to have a look and work out how much 1.0 car really would be 3rd party or a 4 litre v6 would be 3rd party also.

If you already have an everyday car then have you considered a classic? Aon do an unlimited mileage policy for pre 1972 cars. That is about £130 a year. If you are already using your ncd on the beemer then you'll have to start a fresh with a new policy for an ordinary car. I looked at a group 1 cinquecento and that was £500 ish fully comp for a year with no ncd. It was about £480 for TPFT. Your current insurer may offer you a discount on a second car which would reduce it. Admiral also seem to be doing multi vehicle policies now but they don't seem to like modified or imported cars.

I'm not sure I can think of a classic I'd only be spending a grand on and using every day though...

Volvo T5? Cracking car Gromit, but insurance cheapie? Don't think so. Eats front tyres like I do chocolate & drinks fuel like I do beer. Almighty fun though.

OK, be fussy about the image thing if you really insist, but if you have a decent primary car I don't see why & besides, if you're having dirt cheap motoring it's you having the last laugh. Older Micra's ace & simple, plenty to go wrong on yer 205GTi, the 306TD a belting suggestion. As everyone knows HJ adored Jettas which are just so much more non-focus than Golfs. What else? Hear nice things about audi80s, but never even been in one. if someone else endorses that it would be on my list for you-least girly looking thing so far. Do post back with what you go with & how you get on with it.

I would consider the Xantia.

If you want serious wellie the L reg 2.0 16v is just up your street. I had the VSX with this engine in it, and sold it a couple of years ago for £600 with long MOT and 75K on the clock. I would have kept it longer but I was tempted into a 4 wheel drive.

E-bay is getting too expensive these days. local free-ads paper seems much better at the moment. Too much junk fetching big money on E-bay, too many wanna be car dealers. its a good place to sell but not so clever for buying...cheers...Keo.

cheers for suggestions.
i will get the wife to insure the best buy. as i insure the bmw with my name. the wife was £580 (that cheap?) and it was only £380 for me to insure bmw.
its a weird one, where if im only going to be doing 100m a week, dont really want thin tin can, half of it is on a dual carriage way, so want something that will stand half a chance at 60mph crash, also been thinking around the idea of a load lugger too, its a real toughie trying to decide.
so list should be like this.
large.
safe.
fast
economical.
sporty.
under a £1K
would like auto
can maintain & service myself.
not a girlie car!
large hatchback? dunno about an estate.
get my money back in a years time?
the wife is saying "you want the moon on a stick you do!"
yes ebay is looking pretty poor, cars are cheaper on autotrader locally.
what was the car that won on topgear recently? i remember they all had to buy a car for £100-200? cant remember how much. and had to drive from here to there.

Something fairly simple, plenty of cheap spares, not much image, but solid.

Carlton? Still some tidyish ones around, just don't buy one with a towbar - they were popular with caravan owners.

The car that won on TopGear was a Volvo 760 (or possibly 960). Cost £1! Might be worth lookin at main dealer pxes.

If I were looking for a cheap car I'd most certainly look in auctions. Bought 1.9tdi Passat, V reg for 2k - and it goes fine. Looks like the previous owners kids were 'challenging' though - just exactly how do you rip the drivers arm rest off ?!!!!
...and what do you mean a Micra is 'girly' ? - Poor thing has hurt feelings now, and most likely won't start tomorrow.

Cheers all
