On setting one, my heater fan makes an irritating chirpy squeaking noise. How viable is the idea of getting it out and greasing it a bit? Or am I likely to end up messing with some electric current and setting my dashboard on fire?
Car is a Fiat Coupe, although I'd guess that's irrelevant. {not neccessarily, as other owners may also have a similar squeak and could advise, hence why I've added it to the subject header - DD}

No idea of this car,but motor is usually sealed so cannot do anything to it,sure the fan has not got anything stuck in airway causing fan to squeak.
May not be audible at higher speeds but just a thought

Cheers Steve. Fan and motor are one unit, I've had them out and put oil wherever I dared (ie not near the motor itself) and replaced, and it seems a fair bit better. As you say, it doesn't squeak at higher fan speeds.

What I do with the Merc ones is run them on the bench until the motor is warm (15 mins) and then squirt some ATF around the motor shaft bearings (plain brass bearing) - run it some more and repeat. Then put it back in the car. They go one for another 5 years at least.

Interesting. Is there a reason for using that rather than just general purpose lubricating oil?

I've used "3in1" in the past.

Had a Tipo that blew fuses when the heater was turned above 2 of 4. Took the fan and motor assembly out (easy to access on the Tipo), and stripped the motor . The commutator was filthy, and all the grooves were filled with gunge. Old toothbrush in some paraffin , and it came clean in the end. Re-assembled, and hey, Hurricane Katrina at the turn of a knob.

Not really - its just always worked well for me. It has about the 'right' viscosity - not too thick and not too thin.

Right. Cheers all. Touch wood, the light oiling seems to have helped a lot for now (it sometimes squeaks now on setting 1 only when turning left, which I can cope with) but if it gets worse again, I may try the ATF.
