I am not a great fan of TB, though he came across quite well on Parky, however it is true to say that he would not have been criticised for supporting MG Rover if the company had gone from strength to strength and the jobs were secure long term. Rather a case of damned if you do dammed if you dont.

Agree with Cheddar, although whatever Blair and HMG do, someone has a go. In this case it seems (I haven't read the report yet)that a £6M gamble may have secured the future of MGRover. It didn't but it was a gamble. OK, you can say that they shouldn't gamble with our money, but it may have worked, to the benefit of lots of people who are now jobless.

Definitely damned whatever you do.

At least they didnt keep the 6 mill a week lifeline going till after the election, then let it fold.

£1.2 million of the 'loan' went to the auditors/accountants for one week's fees. Nice work if you can get it!!!
Blair on the rack - The Lawman
I think the point is that at the time the loan was made, it was screamingly obvious that the game was up, and there was no realistic chance of a rescue. That being so, there was no prospect at all of the "loan" ever being repaid.

This was a case where Blair and co needed to be seen to be "doing something", and what they did was to fork over £6 million of our cash. In the great big scheme of things i suppose we got off lightly.

If i thought that it all went into the pockets of staff I could live with it. To hear that a large chunk of it went elsewhere is a shocker.

The net cost is somewhat less because all workers who went onto benefits did so week later than they would have done.

You know when a politician is lying, It is when he opens his mouth. They awarded every school in the country a minimum of £75000 pounds to modernise their Science labs before the election and now Lord Sainsbury says they will not get it as there is no money available this is after schools where given the go ahead to spend it.

According to this morning's Terrorflag Gordon Brown is going to have a Prius until he becomes PM (apparently there aren't any bulletproof Priuses yet even in Hollywood).

It was a blatent Election bribe - it was clear at the time that MG Rover couldn't be saved.

As for Tony Bliar on Parky - why has he never faced Paxman, Humphreys et al and been asked proper questions about such matters as MG Rover?

Man speaks with forked tongue as far as i am concerned.

Of course this was an election bribe.

MG Rover is a disaster that has been slowly festering since the end of the second world war. It's preposterous to blame a govt that only came in long after it was too late to save those remains. Greedy idle bosses and greedy idle workers were to blame, doing their bad deeds consistently over 50 years. Successive govts too, for not coming down on them like a ton of bricks.

All over now, and nothing to shout about.

Just watched Central News South. They showed all the unsold brand new Rover's that are scattering the runways of RAF Upper Heyford. No one has a clue as to who actually owns them.

Are you hinting at a mass back room swoop to save some of our precious national heritage, DD?

"slowly festering since the end of the second world war. It's preposterous to blame a govt that only came in long after it was too late to save those remains."

OK to blame the gov for the waste of £6.5 million "long after it was too late to save those remains." though?

OK, but just small change against the overall picture. Delorean was much worse.

So what did it do up to 1979?
