Has anyone got one of these cars ? I think they are a great little car but its only doing 37-39 mpg and vauxhall service said this is about right ...! Anybody any experience ?
It did 39mpg on a 160 mile round trip ...!

The engine is still tight at the moment, but when it's done a few thousand miles fuel economy should improve.
Official figures are:-
Urban driving = 42.2 mpg
Extra-urban driving = 62.8 mpg
Combined figure = 53.3 mpg
but these are calculated from lab conditions, and not real life everyday driving.

Should average 48 to 50 mpg easily.

What did you drive previously?
|
Diesels will use more fuel in cold weather but not to this extent. Something wrong with it, unless you're driving it hard.
|
Why would a diesel use more fuel in cold weather?
|
I don't know the technical reason, it's what a mechanic told me. I guess it's to do with the engine taking longer to heat up.

Thanks all for replys .. had it on the Vauxhall computer today everything normal .. surprise surprise.. was told not to use city diesel ! Anyone else told this ?
Had 3 Golf GT TDIs in a row and they returned 48 - 52 all day long !
Contacting Vauxhall but dont hold out much hope ..
Might change it to an 1.9tdi Seat Altea ..!

Hi, regarding your discussion about fuel economy, i got the impression that new cars will consume more petrol within it's first few months from what you said. Is this correct, as i purchased a new Corsa SRI 1.4 16v to replace my clio, which was a 1.2 16v and find a huge difference in fuel consumption! I filled it up a week ago and it's nearly empty and i have only been driving to work and back, ( live about 6-8 miles from work). Will this improve with time? Also, the car has twinport and i wondered if anyone could tell me what that is.

I've been told a similar story - although I'm currently in the Mondeo TDCI camp.
Have you read HJ's diesel running in recommendations? Very worthwhile.
|
Yes I've run one of these from new and the consumption will get better as the engine loosens up.
Would you really get rid of a great car for an extra 9mpg?
|
well no cos i still have it but its the principle !! plus 9mpg is 90miles over a tank .. took it to a different vauxhall dealer after speaking to vauxhall customer services ... what a difference ... its going in to be re mapped and two front lower arms replaced ... plus does anyone know if you can get all the doors to open from the inside using the drivers door lock ???
|
On our Corsa you can unlock all the doors by turning the key to unlock, let go back to the central postion then turn to the unlock position again. I imagine it should work for your Meriva as well.

I find these discussions on fuel consumption very interesting, as no car that I have ever owned had ever varied a great deal in its fuel consumption over the time I had them. The longest period I have ever owned a car is the soon be 12 year old Xantia 1.9 TD. The fuel consumption of this car has never been below 40 mpg and I can normally rely on around 600 miles per tank, the tank capacity being 65 litres, which I think is about 14.3 gallons.
The car does very little mileage now and it is mostly used for short journeys, but I can still bet on a minimum of 40 mpg. I have never really done any calculations on long trips, the car being used for a long time by my wife and myself for a combination of short and longish journeys. However, I would think it would be capable of high 40s on long journeys.
So, less than 40 mpg for a modern diesel in a smallish car sounds very poor to me.
