Does anyone have any clues why the charge light stays on,the car is an L reg corsa diesel,it is charging at 13.5 volts and starts OK,I have read on another forum about a charging relay, any advice please, Regards Burman

I would expect if the alternator was charging correctly to see 14.0/14.2v.

Sounds like the brushes are on the limit. They are part of the regulator pack which can be changed. Regards Peter

if this car is fitted with the Isuzu engine, then the alternator will have a separate charge warning light relay situated in drivers side kickwell just above the bonnet release handle.I would suggest you get the system checked properly because the charging voltage may be ok but the drive voltage for the relay could be too high ,thus burning out the relay.

and setting fire to the car/van? had two of these that have been burnt here,as said needs checking /replacing as the loom goes into meltdown.

This really is one charging system that always needs a professional's attention. Like oldman, I've had two catch fire and completely burn out - one when it was actually driving in.
More commonly; the new alternator is frequently ruined by being fitted without fully understanding the root cause of the previous failure. Reconditioners are very wise to the fact that it's often a circuitry fault on these and they rarely accept "faulty new unit" claims.

Blueprint do a replacement relay, ADZ91301, should be roughly £15
from a factor. Vauxhall is around £30.

There is a diode in the relay that turns the light off occassionally these blow and the light stops on permantly. It does not do any harm whatsoever but you will not see any genuine fault when it arises.

Like previously said, you need to get the charging circuit professionally checked out! Charge rate of 13.5 volt is not enough for this system, needs to be over 14v.
Many factors cause this all have been raised:
1) the alternator goes faulty,
2) the charge relay burns out, causing the alternator to go faulty,
3) Although there is 13.5v getting to the battery the relay could be receiving 18v?????
4) Another fault is that the glow plugs could be permanantly stuck on, there is a timer box which works through a sender unit which cuts off the feed to the glow plugs when the engine has reached normal temp. or about 10 mins. If this sender or control box is faulty this causes the alternator to charge its maximum output continously thus burning it out, and other damage.
GET THE SYSTEM CHECKED, DON'T MESS ABOUT!!!

The car has been checked today by professionaly checked today, the charge relay was found to be U/S,all now seems to be OK,thanks to everyone who helped,Regards Burman
