Please forgive my ignorance but which engine oil should be used in this vehicle? The handbook says: 'API grade SG or better' but that does not mean anything to me!

Sorry...I have just realised that Webmaster has provided the answer in the 4th item on permanent list! So it is just a case of deciding which brand fits the bill...Castrol GTX perhaps.

As you now probably know SG is "old technology" so from memory Castrol GTX 15W/40 is SJ (so better) and will be more than adequate provided the viscosity grade is OK in your handbook. My 1989 Cavalier listed SG and any multigrade from 5W/30 to 20W/50!

I'd go by mileage and valve noise. Try the thinner oil, but if it makes the engine noisier switch to a 20/50 next time.
