Only test I've seen was for an Audi A4 - 2.0 petrol v 1.9 TDi. The diesel was about 5p per mile cheaper over 3 years of ownership.

The tests I have seen show exactly the opposite,in Germany where diesel is cheaper than petrol upto 50k km in two years the petrol was the best buy by a long way.Plus long term ownership of a complex diesel can prove very expensive.

The test I read was done when diesel in the UK was 2p per litre more than petrol - if diesel is less than petrol in Germany what aspect of running the diesel makes it cheaper to run a petrol model instead?

The diesel most have much higher costs in terms of depreciation, insurance or servicing costs, as the lower cost of fuel and the higher mpg of the diesel needs to be lost amongst those three running costs.

The diesel dosn't necessarily lose more depeciation: it depends at what point in its life cycle you buy and sell it. In general, disels seem to depreciate more slowly from new, but depreciation curves can vary from model to model.

Look at the secondhand prices in a guide like Parkers to get an idea.

Not sure such a site exists. You could do worse than spend some time reading through some of the posts here - lots of real life experiences and good advice on car choices from knowledgeable people. Try a forum search on "petrol or diesel."

When I did the sums upon handing back the company Passat TDi, I calculated I needed to do at least 15k miles pa to make the diesel worthwhile. I factored in cost at the pump, mpg and the additional cost to purchase a diesel over a petrol car.

You should also consider maintenance - I'm not sure if it would be more expensive to service.

I knocked up a spreadsheet to show the numbers & differences, not sure if I can find it but PM me your mail address & I'll have a look.
One of the conclusions I came to was that the breakpoint is 20K miles & in the UK the minimal difference in fuel costs make it quite marginal. Depreciation makes a far greater difference for instance.

I did some calculations a while ago, and I came up with about 17 - 18k as the breakeven. Saying that, I've just got an Accord Diesel as I'm now expecting 35k plus. and I'm only getting 40 mpg :-(. I'm hoping it'll improve.

I think that the breakeven point depends on a lot of factors, including the age at which you buy the car, and when you sell it.

It seems to me that it the choice comes down to cost, it's worth doing the calculations for each car. Purchase price, resale price, fuel consumption, servicing costs, costs of non-routine maintenance (will the vehicle still be under guarantee of the common rail fails? so how about an extended wararnty if it's not covered), cost of particulate filter replacement (if appropriate), then include any differences in tax (annual road tax plus any bik tax if its a company car).

All good points NW.

To give an idea, I was 28, doing 15k a year, no business use and thinking of spending about £8k as far as I remember...

Now if you were a little older!!

I get the feeling that NW meant the age of the car!

Although diesel cars have historically held their price, I wonder what the effect on depreciation will be if the fears about common rail reliability are justified.
