I believe that it is like metallic paint, but instead of aluminium flakes, it contains mica flakes which change colour depending on viewing angle.

That is also my understanding.

the metalic has metal flakes that are flat, pearl has mica in it which has multi angles to give the effect

metalics are base color with a clear coat

pearls can be 2 stage like metalic or they can be even more complex with a base color, then pearl effect, then sometimes a tinted clear coat.

to be honest all pearls ive ever used always need a basecoat of a very similar colour before the pearlescent is applied and then lacqered.
sorry steveo3002
i didnt mean to overide your good post

Greetings mm. Tom Wolfe book of recycled articles 'The Kandy-Colored Tangerine Flake Streamline Baby' has a piece on US customising which does involve some very exotic paint finishes... unfortunately Wolfe isn't all that interested in the technicalities but apparently some of the best and most expensive of these paints use real fish scales (from what kind of fish I don't know) suspended in coloured lacquer. Very expensive and time-consuming to apply as well.

Of course like anyone else I love a pretty motor but the prettier they are the more you worry about them and the more it hurts when they get a bruise or a black eye. Matt grey, black or khaki are the best colours. No nonsense about them.

Hi Lud yes you've just reminded me of a brush painted Opel Rekord i owned in the early 80's!
Back to Sudan on Monday for me the only car colours there are white!

Just imagining what a nightmare pearlescents must be for the repair industry. Metallics are tricky enough to colour match!
