Road Angel Navigator - Dude - {P}

My son is thinking of buying one of these units ( combined camera detector & G.P.S. Navigator) and would appreciate forum views on this unit. Many thanks

A Average Camera detector , an average Navigater, above average price.

If you son has any glimpse of PC technical skill get a tomtom and download the (was free - now cheap) camera database overlay.

Got a brand new Go 700 on my desk. The camera database is still free, but seemingly one download only for trial.

All I've got to say so far is that the GPS reception doesn't seem all that bright in my office. I guess I'll see how it works out in a car.

Confirmed. SWMBO got another free month after phoning their careline - and speaking softly with them.(she never mentioned the big stick)

Indoors GPS reception is poor. WIll pull in a 5 bar signal from my front window - but then if you need to use it indoors its the wrong product. We have a couple of Technical GPS machines (for hillwalking) no where near as friendly to use and the signal can be very flakey and difficult to acquire on anything other than a cloudless day.

Rumour about TomToms not working in Fords with heated front screens is a load of rubbish. Tried and tested in SiL's Puma.

I can confirm that the Ford heated front screen rumour is a myth. I have a C-Max with a heated screen, and my PDA with built in GPS works fine with Copilot, and gets a signal lock in seconds in more or less all circumstances!

Just how far do you need to "drive" your office then? I always thought that offices were pretty immobile things!!!!!

T.V.M - what are the benfits of the tomtom + camera data base over the Road Angel Nav other than price ????

You guys talking abou the tomtom database?

I was refering the www.pocketgpsworld.com speed camera database, reckoned to be the best of its type.

As I said, its an average speed camera detector (taking the Origin B2 as the gold standard) a less than average Navigator (taking TomTom as the gold standard) at a higher than average price.

Its a box of compromises for a high price.

TVM - Is pocketgpsworld database down loadable on all camera detector units or is it unit specific.????

I have a Micro Road Pilot and am not overly impressed with their database accuracy and would like to switch if possible as pocketgps is a far cheaper option at only £19 per annum

All the detail you require is on the site.

They cover most of the types that will accept POI's or Overlays.

Road Angel Navigator - Statistical outlier
I'm using TomTom Navigator 5 and then using CheckPOInt 5 to download speed camera databases. It's not completely perfect, but it's unusual to find a camera that's not in there, and it's normally because I've forgotten to update the database recently then gone through roadworks.

Biggest flaw is that there can be a tendency for a single camera to show up as a cluster of four or five as a result of how the database is put together.

Oh, I should have said. It's completely free.

Slightly off topic, but has anyone else found that Tomtom traffic has recently become much more useful as it's now reliable? I did hear a rumour they'd started to use Trafficmaster data or something..?

Arrgh - Following the hints from this thread, I see that the pocketgps database is going subcription. Blast!

The January database is the last free one - just downloaded my copy.

I bought one three months or so ago. What everyone says about the price is right (Come on Down! - I'll get my coat...) A colleague bought a Tom Tom somethingorother which does the same for half the price.

I'm on my second unit now. The first one refused to navigate. The speed camera function still worked though. After much email tooing and froing with the manufacturers, they promised to send me a new SD card but it never came. I lost patience and took the thing back to Halfords for an exchange.

The new one seems (touch wood) to be working ok now. When going from Peterborough to Thetford, my inbuilt satnav takes me around Downham Market. The Road Angel takes me through it. I followed RA's advice yesterday. Never again - Downham Market is a pit! Generally though, Lexus and RA tend to agree. Despite being very unsafe, it is useful to be able to change/enter the route whilst driving, which is something I can't do on the in-car system.

A friend had a Road Angel unit which made me go for the Navigator. Chances are after all I've read about Tom Toms on here, I'd be more open minded in the future. I did hear something about Tom Toms being a bit pants when it came to entering postcode destinations. Can anyone confirm this?

All in all, despite fellow BRs saying it's an average navigator and an average camera detector, it hasn't let me down yet (apart from Downham Market...!)

SWMBO bought me a new road atlas for Christmas. The price was down from £10.99 to about a fiver. It's incredibly reliable and easy to use and even though I leave it in full view in the car, it hasn't been nicked yet!
