VWGOLF DRIVER MK2-1989-This car is excellent in every way except one-The dreaded Pierburg 2E2 carb suffers from "carb icing" symptoms in winter months only..(in summertime car is 100% ok)-
Are there any quick fixes for this problem??The hot air intake pipe is all intact, and the flap inside air cleaner is not jammed..Ive heard that the flap can jammed open to allow continual hot air in cold weather,if this a possible remedy, how do I go about this?and exactly how do I get to the flap in order to jam it open?Car is too good to scrap/renew over such a minor, but also very annoying/potentially dangerous problem. Will not consider replacing carb with Weber etc

Tony if I remember correctly there are two rubber hoses that go into the air filter assembly - one hose goes to the base of carb and provides suction - it is this suction that is used to pull open the flap. The other hose goes from the air filter to the hot air flap that is operated by the suction from the engine. In the air filter assembly both the hoses are connected to a thermostatic valve that decides via the temperature in the air filter whether the flap needs to open to let hot air in or closed when the ambient temperature is correct and presumably somwher between the two. It is possibly this valve that is jammed and can be cleaned out by washing in thinners or petrol nb the existing vacuum pipes will be difficult to pull off - best to remove air filter properly to remeve this component for cleaning. . A quick way to sort your problem out would be to run a new bit of vaccum pipe direct from the carb to the flap assembly but it will always run 'hot' which will solve your icing problem but probably not good for fuel consumption.
Haynes used to do a manuel for solex & perburg carbs - might be available at your reference library that explains how they work - and armed with this info, diagnostics isn't difficult

Has your inlet manifold got a 'hedge hog' heater in it and a single wire comming out of it. Id so check the currect is being drawn when ignition on and also check the earth strap. Regards Peter

I've got a Sierra used mainly for short journeys with a similar carb and similar problem. I just bung up the cold air intake pipe in winter with the cut off bottom of a Campbell's soup tin - it fits perfectly. This removes easily for longer journeys. We also have a '87 Golf CL in excellent condition but OK on the icing front so far. If you can't get the flap valve working and it's jammed in the cold position you could try the same trick. The spring hose clips on the VW pipe are a real pain though. You could replace one of these with a Jubilee clip to make things easier. I expect most scrapyard cars have suspect flap valves.

remove the first part of the intake ( from the arch ).. lift the flap manually with a scewdriver, using a self tapper, put a screw under it.. hold it around 50% open.. not great for MPG.. but constant hot air feed.. assuming the tiny pipe from the manifold is ok.. i used jubille clips to secure this tin piper agaisnt the intake pipe and the exhuast manifold.

Chaps, Had the same problem with my VW Mk 2. Removed A/F box and excersised hot air flap as it was seized to let hot air in only. Wd40 will do it.you can check it works by sucking on tube that operates flap. Then renewed corrugated 50mm hose from stove to A/F box. cost about 4 quid. Use jubilee clips to secure Engine now idles smoothly and wont cut out after a long run.
