I am hoping to buy a Mondeo/Vectra type family car during the next few weeks. Probably be an 05 reg car. My question is does the number plate change (06 on 1 March) tend to have an immediate effect on used car prices. Might it be worth me waiting a couple of weeks to see if i can get a better deal.
Grateful for any advice.
Thanks - Andy

The new reg, won't have an immediate effect on the screen price - however, the 'book' trade price, will be marked down accordingly - drops of a couple hundred £££, each month, on this market segment, wouldn't be unreasonable.
It's when you come to sell on, again, you'll have a price dieferntial, for your trade in. This will be more of a notcable, figure, the newer the car is, when you decide to buy again.
& if you do your homework well, you'll see plenty of depreciation lost, already, for you, on a 9-12month example, rather than buying too new. Saying that, do consider the special deals, a brand new, model, might offer, just in case!!
Also, rather than the cars you mentioned, take a look at Mazda 6 before deciding!!

i said this in january vansboy and nearly everyone replied that it wouldnt bother them,it was in relation to a 2005/06 registration and buying in december rather than january.

Thanks, vansboy.
I will almost definitely go for a Mondeo rather than a Vectra. I hadn't really considered a Mazda 6 becuase I assumed that there was no way I would get an 9-12 month old one for less than 9.5k. Also, I know Ford and Mazda are connected, so do the cars share the same components. Are they the same engines? (Diesel 2 litre).
The Mondeo, on the whole, seems to get a very good press. I am, dare I say it, a caravanner(!!), and Mondeos are becoming increasingly popular, apart from it's suspect clutch.

The Mondeo and Mazda 6 diesel are not the same engine. The first generation Mazda 2.0d's in 121 and 136ps were not particularly economical - I've heard a few complaints from owners, and Diesel Car only got 38.6MPG from the 121 on their standard test, where the Mondeo did 45.8MPG.

Admitting to caravanning, eh???
Never mind, though, you can get medication, aparently!!
How about the 407, they're now showing up, as used examples, too - they'll be pretty good as tow cars & diesel, shouldn't be any problems.
Have you checked www.towsure.co.uk they have towcar reviews. Another site worth viewing www.towsafe.co.uk

Thanks vansboy,
I took my medication this morning!
The 406 was (and is) a very popular towing car. However, I would not buy a French car. My Father-in-law was, until recently, a MOT mechanic, and he said I should avoid French cars. Only his opinion, of course, but I tend to do what he says.
The Mondeo is a getting a very good press in the caravanning world. "I didn't know the caravan was there" is the often used comment by Mondeo owners (probably not the view held by people following the caravan, of course). My only worry is the clutch which some say is not up to reversing the caravan. Very expensive to replace as well.
