I think some of the worst drivers are middle-aged. They've lost the quick reactions possessed by younger drivers and have yet to acquire the prudence possessed by older drivers.

Definitely a thread that is looking to provoke a reaction.
I think you are talking right out of your bottom. Or maybe you have come in after a liquid lunch and felt a bit saucy, either way your comment is certainly contentious. Could you back it up with factual data?
After 26 accident free years, I have just decided that at the tender age of 47, I would like to drive something larger than your average car. Therefore I took myself off to the local LGV driving school and passed at the first attempt, the C - rigid class - driving test after what I consider to be a minimal number of hours tuition. Without wishing to sound boastful, the three other people on test the same afternoon as me were all, ahem!, younger, two of them considerably.
By the way, how old are you, L'escargot?

Missed a vital bit off the last paragraph. What I needed to add was the three other yound fellows joining me at the test centre ALL FAILED.
So 1-0 to us slow middle aged types!

Pride comes......

Pride "goeth" actually. " ...before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall".

Ref. also the Greek saying-'Those whom the gods would destroy, they first make proud'...!

I guess it had to come up, weve had the young driver discussion, and the old driver discusssion, had to come to middle aged drivers now. Personally i think age has very little to do with how good a driver you are, just how much experience you have. i have met middle aged drivers who have never written a car off or had accidents but there are plenty who have had. so lets hear what you say

Temporarily not a student, where did the time go???

At the end of the day, age is only just one factor in the equation of a driver`s competence, the other equally important consideration is health & physical fitness.
As a pensioner, I walk up to 20 miles a week and when I see some of the obese youths driving, who can barely fit behind the wheel, I question how good their reactions would be in an emergency situation.????
Whilst several B.R`s mentioned the need for older people to be retested to check their driving skills, I believe all drivers (particularly those driving buses and H.G.V`s) should get regular health checks to identify those vulnerable to heart attacks at the wheel.!!!!!

might want to check that one as i think you'll find they do at a fairly considerable cost...cheers...keo.

Just passed my second compulsory age-related HGV (LGV as it is now) medical although I don't expect to be driving any lorries in the near future. First medical comes at 45 then every 5 years.

I'm middle-aged and I don't think my driving has changed very much since I was young but I was never a tearaway to start with. Obviously I have become more practiced and experienced but I try to drive the same as I did then. Also I don't think my reactions have slowed, certainly not by a significant amount.
I'm not claiming to be unique, there must be loads of other drivers who set out just to drive properly right from the start.
Some drivers' abilities might deteriorate in middle age through illness or perhaps life crises or pressure of work. I would imagine that a lot of the bad driving we see is by people who bear the wrath of their boss on their shoulders on the way to the next drop, appointment or whatever.

L'escargot is obviously in the 'older' age bracket!

Which begs the question why insurance co. stats present an issue at 70 years plus?

Blooming heck! Nearly 50. Better hand in my authority to drive Subarus, Volvos. Just dont know how I got through Pursuit Management training.
Best hand in my Competition licence as well!
There are old drivers and bold drivers but how many old bold drivers are there??

My earlier post dissing this whole ageist thing was censored, presumably because it was deemed inane babble.
It probably was, but I still don't know what the inner and outer limits of middle age are. Although now of pensionable age I can't help feeling that I am only verging on middle age, although the actual figure would make me sound pretty well past it to some.
And since I am asking questions, what does LOL mean? I've worked all the others out but can't understand that one.

Laughs out loud or Laughing out loud depending on who you speak to.

Thanks Adam. Course I knew it betokened amusement.

Or 'Lots of Love' which might have been appropriate!

This is a generalisation and therefore the comments cannot be taken seriously.

I'm 57, so I guess that's late middle age.
I reckon the most significant factor in drivers in the 40-60 age group is complacency. We've all been there, done it, bought the tee-shirt.
I try -- I really do try -- to remember this every day and compensate for it, but I don't suppose I'm wholly successful.

In my day to day driving its usually the drivers of estate cars that seem to do the most dangerous things imaginable. Like overtake 3 cars on a single carriage way with oncoming traffic and and forcing the the traffic to brake because they won't move out of 5th gear.
