M4 route advice please - Marky Mark
Hi,
We are travelling from Heathrow 11am Monday morning and are travelling from Exeter on Sunday night & staying over at a travelodge on the M4 (Heston between Jct 2 & 3 Eastbound).

Not knowing this area at all, can anyone advise of the traffic on a Monday monday c8am (horrendous I assume?) as we need to get on the M4 Eastbound to Jct 2 & then head back westbound so we can come off a Jct 3 to park at one of the long stay Heathrow car parks in that area.

Also, is the M5-M4 the best route from Exeter given that the hotel in on the motorway.

Any advice from experienced commuters of this areas would be much appreciated!

To be honest I think you are worrying a bit too much here !
Heston services is very close to Heathrow, and a lot of the congestion is on the M4 way back from there at the moment due to the roadworks near J8/9. My advice would be just follow the M4 further East, leave at the next exit and take the great west Rd back to Heathrow. This is because Heston services is fuyrther along the M4 than the exit for Heathrow.
With regards to travelkling from Exeter, I actually go to Exeter occasionally, and have arrived at the conclusion that you are better off doing M5/M4 rather than the cross-country route, as what you save in miles on the cross-country route, you lose hugely in time and frustration.

But be aware that the M5 between Clevedon and Bristol is all in roadworks at the moment, so try and avoid this at peak times.

You won't be able to change direction at Heston, so if the hotel is on the East bound side, you'll have to leave towards London, and then double back, either on the M4 or the A4/Bath Road, as as been suggested.

Pop the postcodes of the hotel and the long term parking into www.multimap.com or www.streetmap.co.uk and you'll get a route for your trip in the morning. Some of the LT parking cos. are some way off airport, and by the time you've checked in, unloaded, waited for the shuttle, been to all the other terminals first etc. it can take a while, so do leave loads of time.

thanks for all the contribtions so far - it is very reassuring to have such useful information & I will take it on board. Given the distance/hassle of the offsite parking for Heathrow, I will pay the exta £25-£35 and go for meet and greet at Departures. At least then all I have to worry about is getting to Terminal 1 from the Heston and this sounds straightforward.

Will definately use the M5-M4 option, previously used A303-M3-M25 and agree about the frustration! Will be travelling on Sunday afternoon on the way up and don't get back at the airport until 5pm on the Friday, so traffic should be less of an issue!

Again, thanks for all the pointer!

Roadworks between J15 and J14 slowed me up yesterday. Gatsos on the motorway in the roadworks at J8/9 Maidenhead (50 mph limit) in both directions are working.

Also beware of speed camera vans between J14 Hungerford and J17 Chippenham. These were launched with great fanfare c a year ago and are still in operation

There's a Travelodge on both sides of the M4 at Heston. You might think of staying at the westbound lodge and doing the 'loop' (up to J2 and back to Heston) on Sunday instead.

Traffic may still be heavy (end of half-term for some) but at least you'll get that bit out of the way sooner.
