Hi, I own a 1992 Rover 214 Cabriolet (I know, poor me!!!), well recently gear selection has become abit of a gamble....... sometimes it'll go in, sometimes it won't. I can also, sometimes hear a rattling noise when the clutch pedal is depressed. I thought thrust bearing but the noise is quieter than any thrust bearing rattle I've heard. Any ideas anyone, please, before I go and have a clutch fitted. Thanks in advance!

is the clutch cable stiff or pedal need harder press to release clutch?.early cables on these stretched faster than the newer version, what mileage it done

Hi steve. Changed the cable and problem still occurs. Odometer reads 151k but engine was rebuilt at 140k, not gearbox though. Thx

gearbox is usually not a problem on these, the rattle not certain without hearing it. But check out rear engine mount as they can fail causing this problem -may even cause the rattle?

Cheers. Also, when clutch depressed the car sometimes tries to pull away as if clutch not working. When it was ok I did clutch test (5th gear at low speed full acceleration) with no slip at all......will check rear mount first thing before I order a thrust bearing. Cheers Steve, Dan 'n' Sam

Not releasing correctly, could be the release lever bush on bellhousing has worn giving play on lever so clutch does not release properly/or sticking release bearing due to dust on input shaft..sounds like stripdown is needed to find out

Is this the PG1 box in this car?
If it is, then it could be the typical problem of worn bearings (esp diff). This problem is usually most acute on the higher power engines, but given your mileage it could be affecting yours.
I know an excellent place in Coventry if that's any good to you.

Sounds like the shaft that goes from the gearbox througth the clutch,Ist gear motion shaft.Requires gearbox strip down or buy one from a reconditioner not to expensive if you do the install yourself.

Thanks to you all. I removed gearbox this afternoon to find thrust bearing not in its correct place, it was moving along the shaft of its own accord, so I got new one (£15inc VAT) and got the 'box mounted again before being beaten by daylight. Tomorrow will tell if this was the problem. Thx again.

As long as it was connected to release lever assembly it has free movement on the shaft, did you check for excess play in the bearing.
would have been advisable to remove clutch as well just in case of any problems, otherwise it means another stripdown

Thrust bearing plastic clips were broken and it could not be connected to the shaft. However.........having put it all back together it's still a gamble with gear selection. When I removed the 'box drain plug the magnetic tip had about a centimetre thickness of metal shards, and oil was black, does this suggest a knackered gearbox? Can get another one for around £30. Oh I did look at clutch and it looked good. Also, the gearbox was all sealed up with black silicone and had been sprayed black, aren't they usually plain metal? Thx...

These gearbox`s were meant to be sealed for life,ie oil should last lifetime of box (never did think this a good idea)I would change oil in box every 3 years with oil stated by rovers, but never kept one long enough to do so.
as these are at best on occasions hard to change into reverse due to crunching of gear, suspect its come from reverse gear area bearing wear, black oil is not good so would suggest after all your hard work if no change try a another gearbox, bear in mind secondhand box is not likely to be any different, best to get recon from decent reconditioner that can be trusted to do a good job/give a good warranty
