Pug 406 HDI - diesel leak - marts
Hi.

I have a 2001 (VReg) Pug 406 HDI. Its developed a diesel leak either on the injector rail or the injector itself (Injector No 2 I think). Can anyone recommend how to find where the leak is comming from and where to source the spares to fix it (where to get new/recon injectors, what injectors I need for this vehicle etc).

Thanks

whatever you do don't try to find it with your bare hands - the fuel will be highly pressurised.

Does the car start and run normally albeit with a leak?

The diesel can leak from two main sections on a diesel engine. Fuel can leak from the high pressure side, i.e anywhere from the diesel injector pump to the fuel injectors, or it can leak on the low pressure side which is the fuel system between the fuel tank, fuel filter and leak-off pipes that return unused fuel back to the tank.

As a rule, all high pressure fuel pipes are rigid metal and low pressure are rubber or rigid plastic. Diesels suck fuel from the tank and therefore need air tight fuel pipes to prevent air being dragged inside along with the fuel. Think about it like trying to drink through a straw. If there are holes it's difficult to suck up the drink as air gets drawn in. It's the same with a diesel.
Once the fuel enters the pump, it's pressurised to huge pressures and forced through the metal pipes into the injectors. These can leak via the pipe to injector unions.
To check for leaks, first remove any top cover panels on the engine. Start engine and using a torch (even in daylight, engines are dark places) look carefully at all the rigid pipes, unions, and the diesel pump itself.
Turn engine off and get an open ended spanner of the correct size and just go round and see if any of the pipe union nuts are loose. If they are nip them up. All diesels vibrate and I have seen pipework and injector union nuts vibrate loose.

But don't feel for leaks with your fingers whilst engine is running. Diesel at around 300 bar pressure (4350 psi) can do a lot of damage if it gets through your skin at pressure!!

How do you depressurise the fuel system on these?

Mine has some pools of liquid I assume to be diesel in the head recesses under the rail. Theweird thing is, they never seem to get any bigger, although I did get it all out once and it's there again.

I would have thought the easiest way would be to pull the fuel pump fuse while the engine is running.

Spanner's post is good advice; but is exclusively for conventional diesels not electronic common-rail systems. With these [1350 bar] HDI's don't touch anything on them yourself; take it to your local diesel specialist for diagnosis and advice. Any union undone on these means a new pipe.

HDi injectors do sometimes leak; they're now available reconditioned for £200-300 each, which is a lot better than the dealer's price. Fitting and coding them is very much a specialists job.

Hi. Thanks for your advise. It's definately on the high pressure side as, like the other post, I have pools of diesel in the recesses of the manifold. I have been offered a set of injectors, which are for a SIEMENS system and been told to check on the high pressure pump badge to check what system is fitted. Where will I find the high pressure pump to check the type.

I will take it to a specialist for repair, but i I can get the injectors myself it could save a few quid.

Thanks
Martin

What's the economy like on yours marts? Mines a 306 so has a slightly lighter body. If I stick to 60 I can get the often quoted 650 miles to a tank, so I'm going to wait till the situation gets markedly worse.

I very rarely stick to 60 lol (my other car's a subaru impreza so I have a need for that speed). I only really use the PUG for motorway and out of a full tank I usually get around 700+ at the moment with aircon off, but I rarely empty the tank before refilling so I cant be more accurate

I would not, under any circumstances, work on the HDi unless you have had some training and the appropriate kit to tackle the job. These things are not suitable for DIYer's 'having at go'. You will either injur yourself (25000psi+ fuel!) or cause some very expensive damage. You will need to take it to an appropriately qualified and experienced repairer. I think injectors are around the £500 mark each; although as said above you may be able to get recon ones cheaper.

No HDi injectors are around £300 but it's possible to get up to 40% off this with trade discount.
