Pug 406 cam belt - auld reekie
Son is going to get timing belt changed on 2.0ltr Pug 406 petrol , local garage say's the belt is excessivly worn, 90000 mls plus but it has been changed at least once in its lifetime. Wondering how mechaninc visually inspected the belt as the cover was never removed. A mark on one the bolts securing the cover would have been disturbed with spanner or socket so were a bit suspicious of them. Price quoted £310.00, a bit on the high side I thought. Whats the average cost of a new timing belt and other parts need plus labour.

Thanks

Hi Could tell that the belt is worn if the timing is out but very doultful if cover has not been removed.Never changed a 406 before have changed 305 309 and many other cars.Belt about £25 nothing else to buy.Takes 4 hours first time gets quicker the more you do.So a garage should fairly quick.£310 seems over the top. busboy

I had the belt changed in my Xantia 2 ltr petrol, probably the same engine. It cost me about the same as you have been quoted, BUT that included a new water pump(the old one was showing signs of leaking) and 2 new rear suspension spheres. I would recommend changing the pump, anyway, but your quote seems too expensive by about £60.

I can think of no way to check a belt without removing covers and using the mark one eyeball on it. (unless it has broken!)

If you are in the South Gloucestershire area, there are several good Cit/Pug independant specialists.

The garage could be quoting for a cambelt kit, which includes tensioner and idlers. Most garages do this now, as it covers them under warranty. You need to double check their quote, and find out exactly what is on it.
