How come petrol has an octane rating but diesel doesn't seem
to have anything equivalent? (At least not on the forecourts).

Diesel has a cetane rating but the marketing departments haven't caught up with it yet. (Except the Redex guys)

oh yes they have

They don't specifically mention cetane though do they? Most of it just babbles on about better MPG and a cleaner engine. Also, diesel pumps never seem to have a cetane rating listed on them.
I could be wrong - I'm not at my most observant when filling up. It lessens the pain!

The petrol octane rating measures its propensity to detonate prematurely by compression alone in advance of the spark - ie pinking or knocking.
The whole point about diesel is that it is meant to detonate by compression - that is why they are called Compression Ignition engines.

There isn't any direct performance/economy advantage in using fuel with a higher cetane rating so any markings on the forecourt are unneccesary.

Yes there is !
Higher Cetane fuel oils liberate more power per stroke combustion cycle.
Thats one of the reasons why the Americans have never been keen on diesels, as their diesel fuel is very low Cetane compared to what we have in Europe, hence their sluggish smokey diesel vehicles.
