Insurance, better off though annoyed!! - cheddar
I have had my renewal through today from NU direct, 500 quid, by chance I had a cold call from Cornhill today, ran through a quote, £327, did a confused.com search, £305. Ok, so I can save some money though the annoying thing is that NU Direct are quoting me £150 less via Confused.com. Is this another example of the finacial services industries constant focus on customer aquisition at the expense of retention, as per different mortgage rates for new customers only, 0% transfer rate for new CC applications etc etc.

I believe its called inertia marketing and they do it because some of us let them get away with it.

Thing is even if you get a cheaper quote your exiting insurance company will almost certainly match it.

My advice is read all of the quote very carefully.

I have just renewed my cover with E-sure at £201 - a decrease on last year of about £2, I had tried other sites to see if I could better it.

Swiftsure had a price of £139 - Excess was £1000
Churchill came in at £169 - the Voluntary Excess was £250 on top of a compulsory of £250 making £500 for Accidental, Fire & Theft Claims.

When you start to measure like for like the savings were just not there or marginal.

On Cheddar's quotes from NU Direct @ £500 and NU Via Confused.com he may be dealing with 2 different parts of NU - Direct & Broker Branches.

Different Branches of the same company have different policy conditiuons, different under-writing rules (who /what type of car they accept) and different premiums.

NU Direct refused to cover my son's new Prelude 7/8 years ago as he was under 30 - NU Via a Broker were the cheapest at £500 when other Ins Co were quoting £700 - £1100.

It pays to check-up every year just to test the water. The same applies to House & contents cover - do not just accept your Bank or Building Society cover.

I dont always belive confused.com because i put through a guote and the highest was &7000 from admiral! The lowest £3000. I then tried the admiral website and got a more reasonable £3500.
I aso tried a quote on a morris minor and was still quoted £2000 by confused.com

It's not the value of the car that matters, its experience and the potential claim from ploughing into a bus queue.

NU Direct will honour the Confused quote so are resending the renewal docs, this would save me over £100. This annoys me, I could so easily have paid more than I needed to, and what about people like my parents who dont have and are not interested in a computer?

However the Cornhill quote compares like for like and is £200 cheaper!!! than than the origianl NU renewal with no charge for direct debit.

Three times this year (two cars and home) my broker has advised me to change ins co to get a cheaper quote. As I don't pay my broker, their service is excellent value for money! Saved me £200 on car ins for Hynudai (£1,050 - £850) and £400 on Home and Contents cover.

I always use a broker, as when I have an issue, I just leave all the hard work to them.
