In yesterdays Telegraph Business Section:
Google, the internet search engine, has blacklisted BMW, the German luxury carmaker, for breaching its operating guidlines. BMW is alleged to have broken the Google rules by artificially boosting its search rankings. The so-called "Google death penalty" means a search for terms such as BMW or BMW Germany will not produce a link to the company's website.
BMW seem to be trying too hard!

As of 2 seconds ago:
1st link BMW UK sponsored link so I clicked on it to help boost Googles earnings, I am a shareholder.
2nd link BMW worldwide site.
So er.. rubbish.
|
Er....who needs a search engine to find a website with three letters ?
|
This is true, but badly reported.
It refers to Google in Germany, and it is the country specific site which has been punished.
Normally a search would have come up with bmw.de first, followed by bmw.com, now it's just .com.
It also now has been gived a 'search rating' of zero, whatever that means.

I bet they're quaking in their jackboots.

Ah, but people will be searching on terms such as "lane three rental charges" or (in the UK) be looking to solve a problem such as a car inadvertently pulling to the left on the motorway. Directing them to BMW would solve both issues. Others will be wondering why the car in front always drives so close and why it's so scary. Buying a BMW would remove all fears of "grillegaters" and leave them happy to have some irresponsible lunatic driving inches from their snake-eye headlights.

If you go to google.de and type in BMW.The search results shows BMW.de as the second website listed. This site is exactly the same as the British site only its in er..German. BMW don't seem to need to sponser a listing either.
|
This is the third motoring forum I have seen this mentioned on. I have read through the threads and their related links and I am still no closer to understanding exactly what BMW did to upset Google or what Google did to BMW to punish them.
I suppose it really is bliss as they say.

Three letters keyed into Google:
tinyurl.com/dzrwd
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
What\'s for you won\'t pass you by
|

Guess of it was "google blocks Mondeo TDCi" then it would be news here.
|
Makes a nice change from "my neighbour blocks me in" though

SEO (search engine optimisation) is a big business now, where companies employ various 'tricks' to improve their ratings on Google. This isn't just ensuring 'BMW.de' appears when you type in 'BMW Germany' - also things like 'the best German car company' or whatever the company feels it should be in for ! In this case BMW were found out because they weren't very good at spoofing Google and simply stuck up a 'shadow' page which the end-viewer never saw, but Google's search routines did, full of keywords like the above ....

This is how the BBC reported it yesterday:

Thank you Chicken Madras for that link. It certainly gives more information than the newspaper article I reported for this thread.

This is how the BBC reported it yesterday: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4685750.stm
Which says: BMW admitted using so-called "doorway pages" to boost search rankings, but denied any attempt to mislead users.
Why do they do that?
Why not just use normal BME techinques: turn their headlights on full blast and tailgate everybody in the way until they push their way to the top of the rankings? ;)

Yawn.
|
I expect the whole thing was a conspiracy, designed to get people talking about BMW's.
Seems to be working...

Or use the other BMW technique (shared by some other luxury makes and15 per cent of drivers nationally) of waddling self-importantly around in the way until people just have to notice them?
|
Wow so its not just a BMW thing ! Anyway off out to increase my carbon footprint in a particularly rwd way !
|

Knew it was just a matter of time before the usual digs startedl; as I drove home tonight on the M-way (in front of another beemer as it happens), both of us leaving a good gap, watching all your Fords, Vauxhalls, WVMs and Toyotas tailgating each other...not a single BMW in amongst the throng. In fact thinking about it, I see that most nights. Oh well.

Obviously a VERY slow news day. Earlier this week I was hearing about google shares somewhat underperforming...perhaps they should sort that one out.
I should think Google probably need BMW's business more than BMW need them.

It gets boring reading the same drone about BMW drivers every day. You need to change the record.
1. I don't use my indicators because a bulb only has a certain number of hours use, and I need to save the replacement money for the main beam.
2. I drive close because you are in my way, and yes I am more important than you.
3. I am not jelous of your mundano ST, vectra STI, Ford RS whatsit or Seat Leon which are no doubt faster and cheaper than my deisel. I didn't buy one because I had the option to get a nice car.
get over it you lot and move on.
I would however swap it in a flash for a Transit or Sprinter, as then I really would own the whole road, not just the BMW lane on the M4. WVM and BMW drivers keep it up. Eventually we will get the other drivers to admit they are slow and get them moved to the lorry lane.
I do drive a BMW and yes, you probably are in my way....

Not sure if this is something that Google have been doing for ages and it's only just been picked up, but it's BMW Germany and also I've been reading that Ricoh Germany have been given a similar "death penalty"
Lee -- Do you have any conceivable reason for even getting up in the morning?
