Rust treatment - gramar
What's the best readily available ' brush on' rust treatment on the market? I used to used a product made by Comma but my tin is several years old and should probably be thrown away.

Any advice is welcomed.

For unpainted areas I use waxoyl.

POR is US-made stuff available from Frost Auto, it is very very good, but rather expensive.

Do you mean rust remover or rust preventer?

Apologies for asking my own question, but can rust preventers be applied directly to the underside of a car or does it need to be cleaned thouroughly first? If so what does this 'cleaning' need to entail? And what in your opinion is the best product? There seems to be a plethora of products out there these days that claim to sort every problem under the sun!

Recently picked up a Peugeot 106 (1993) and wondered how best to make it last.

To the O.P. There is a good article about rust proofing in the latest edition of 'Car Mechanics' magazine.

Cheers

I see.

Get the underside of the car steam cleaned (£10) and then spray on some Dinitrol black coating (www.rust.co.uk sell it at a good price, about £8/litre). You'll need 3 litres to do the whole underside. Use a Schutz type gun and thin with a bit of white spirit if necessary. Dinitrol is top stuff.

If it's underseal you're looking for, then Tetroseal (made by Car Plan) is also good stuff.

Make sure the unserside of the car is 100% dry before using the treatment, best to leave it in a garage with a fan heater on pointing under the car. You don't want to seal the damp in.
With areas that have already rusted, it is normal to apply extra heat to drive out the moisure that rust harbours.

I use 2 kinds, one is good old phosphoric acid which most rust stabilisers are based on,the other,Kurust, is a resin which seals the stabilised area.If using underseal never apply it to bare metal, like garages do,rust will carry on underneath and eventually come through.

Do you mean don't just paint over the rust or do you mean actually paint the underside first?

Last time I did this I used a wire brush soaked in Kurust to attach the rust spots and then Hammerite'd over the top. Is this an acceptable way of doing this? (Planning to do the same again in the summer to new car)

Painting underseal straight onto metal/rust can (and probably will)cause problems, trapped rust starts creaping beneath the underseal. I restored many cars in the eighties, one was a 1967 Moggie Minor restored in 1988. For the underside I painted on NEW CLEAN oil (cheap 20/50) , leave 24hours to soak in then paint on Waxoyl Underseal(yes it does stick! - just a bit messy). On upper panels I used Finigans NO1 primer. Inside hidden chassis I used a OIL and Waxoyl mix.

Bearing in mind that many cars new in 1988 have long sinced been scrapped - I saw the car last year, still looks good and has not been welded since, the only rust was on the boot lid. If only I had rust proofed this at the time, it looked like new then. Needs a new carb though.
