its going to be a toss up as to which fails first - the software or the car.

I had a Fiat Miafiori for a while in the 1980s - it had windows even that far back....:-)

Hmmm, A company Alfa 147 Selespeed I drove for a couple of years from when they first came out had the 'Microsoft syndrone'.....

Turn off and re-boot !!!

Did it all the time with either the stability control/ABS or engine management - the thing always went hay wire in stop start traffic. Italian electrics/computer systems and microsoft... ohhh no.

V. nice cars when they work ! - It amazed me that most of the parts were the likes of Bosch etc, just the bits in between were not too good !

I'm reliably informed that, in time, all petrol stations will have Fiat/Windows terminals that will enable the latest Microsoft Critical Updates to be downloaded whilst refuelling.

What a horrific combination - of the two manufacturers sworn at by more users than any others.

USB says it all - unserviceable bus.
Microsoft puts Windows into Fiat cars - Avant
Oh, and another thought on USB.

We've had ignition keys that fit both ways since the 1960s (first one I had with one was a Triumph 1300). Why can't a USB connection be made so that it fits both ways?

Maybe one of our IT experts knows the answer to this?

thats a damm good point, i spent ages building a computer sold it to a guy i know and within 1/2 hour he rang me to say computer didnt work.
2 days later i found he had done exactly that,he had put the cable into the motherboard the wrong way round,he said he was tired i cant use the words i said, anyway the motherboard was scrap.

>>he had put the cable into the motherboard the wrong way round,he said he was tired i cant use the words i said, anyway the motherboard was scrap.

cannot get the usb in wrong way round without extreme force, come to that none of the connectors will go in wrong way round without force, some impossible!

But as software has been used for years on ecu`s why should microsoft be any worse

>>Why can't a USB connection be made so that it fits both ways?>>

Because the two contacts are housed in the block on one side of the plug and repeated in the USB port - it's very obvious if you try to put the cable in the wrong way round that something is not right.

Computer cables and leads will either only go in one way or are clearly marked as to the correct insertion.

Sorry - I started that!

I've now asked the question in the computer thread.

I think you mean German wiring.
Almost all electrics in Fiat group cars are Bosch, and have been for a long time.

Windows has been used in cars (most noteworthy BMW's) for some time now.

Now linux and french electrics - that will be the time I run screaming from the room!

just wait for the windscreen to turn blue and the car to stall :P

There was an old email circular ages ago about what would happen to cars if they worked like computers - quite funny and well suited to this thread so i'll see if i can dig it out.
