Mods - move to "I have a question..." if necessary

Can you sleep a family of four in a Formule 1 hotel room ? The website specifically says three, although they must be extensively used by familes. Are they unstaffed? I'd hate to fall foul of a French jobsworth.

N, F1 rooms are three only.

However BB Hotels www.hotel-bb.com do family rooms at a good rate. Twins or double for the adults, two singles on a mezzanine over the en-suite shower for the kids. Good for teens and probably OK for four adults who are not shy of that sot of thing.

Breakfast and general ambience a notch up on Formule 1 as well.

BB worth the extra IMHO - private bathroom

www.envergure.fr/kyriadfr.html do 4 person rooms for a bit more

If you're in France, it's worth the extra Euros to go for the next step up the Accorhotel chain - Etap. A lot nicer, but still very cheap. We've stayed in ones that would sleep four, the website www.accorhotel.com gives good detail. They've mainly been manned around tea and breakfast times although I've yet to check into the one at the French end of the Chunnel and see a person, although they're always there for breakfast.

My biggest complaint about F1 is the lack of toilet seats. I know it's an economy hotel, but that's lacking some basic human decency!!

You can also get some good deals at Novotel (part of Accorhotel chain)by online booking.
eg - I've just booked 2 separate nights for our July holiday
(outward and return jouney overnighters)

Survilliers (just north of Paris)
I familty room ( 1 double bed, 2 singles) for 2 adults + 2 children under 16 costs 60 euros total (around £41)
adult breakfast extra, kids free

Orleans (south of Paris)
as above
68 euros

both nice hotels with outdoor pools - just right after a long drive. Novotels usually on town outskirts, near Autoroutes and usually a Buffalo Grill nearby if you don't want to pay the hotel dinner price

I've tried Formula 1
You don't want to go there ! hard floor, iron bed, shared shower etc
reminded me of a prison cell ( as seen on TV, not from personal experience!)

- also a friend stayed in a Formula 1 near Calais, and as the reception is unmanned (put c/card in machine and get PIN # for room in return)he discovered that the room next door was being used that night by a "lady of the night" to receive her customers !
very noisey and off putting!

"the reception is unmanned (put c/card in machine and get PIN # for room in return)"

which reminds me of the time en route to Le Mans with a car full, we stopped at our booked Etap in Rouen quite late having driven from Calais, only for me to find I'd lost my credit cards... (realised I had left them on the car roof when leaving the ferry - never found)

Good God man, you ARE in France. When I first went we only had a hole in the floor. You will be expecting soap in your room next.

I think you are unlikely to find a jobsworth in a Formule 1; the staff seem mostly to be of Arab or African extraction, young and amenable. I use them if no cheap alternative but I do wonder what sort of clientele they expect when the mattresses are all covered in plastic wrap!

B and B much better, sleep 4 and have a rather nice runny scrambled egg for breakfast. Never had a problem with prior credit card booking on the Net no matter when you turn up in the night although I did see one French couple arrive in separate cars one time and look very frustrated when his card was not accepted.

Cheers, I've booked a BB Hotel about an hour from Dunkirk, it was the plastic breakfast that swung it. 68 Euro for a family of four with breakfast.

I know this is a bit late if you've booked already, but another option to consider next time would be the Villages hotel chain. They do doubles and family rooms, and when I stayed in one last year it was 15E for the night for the two of us! (Private bathroom too!)

Excellent value for money, and the staff were excellent (posted a letter that I'd forgotten to send to my bank over there!)

I've used F1 twice at St Malo, never again,it is very cheap, but as others have said it is just how you would expect a prison cell to be.Should have realised when the reception asked for my shoelaces.Very depressing after a good holiday.
Now when i'm in France i will always check out a small hotel in any small town, bit more expensive but so much better value.

I have used them before across France and they fulfill the basic requirements of a bed/shower/and breakfast. There was one guy on duty in the morning and I found it cheap and quite satisfactory.

A budget hotel chain that nobody's mentioned is Villages Hotel -their website (www.villages-hotel.com/)has English text. They are, I think, much nicer than Formule I and have rooms for 1, 2, 3 and 4 people. The rooms have WIFI for net connection, and the toilets have seats! I can recommend their breakfasts - inexpensive and delicious.
