I'm going to have about £1,000 to spend on a car.
I would like a medium size car (escort sort of size), 1.4 or 1.3, comfortable (i'm 6ft) and something that has a bit of zip in the engine department.
Any suggestions?

Forget zip for a grand. Get a good Escort 16v.

Maybe a Honda Civic, although 1.3 or 1.4 wont be nippy in the size car you want! The 1.5 Civics are nippy.

Is a decent Honda really to be found for that sort of money? If so I am woefully out of date.

Yeah, you can pick up decent 91-95 era Civics, the UK built 5dr Civic, or even maybe an early 95 on Japanese Civic 3 door for a grand, but the 95-on 3 dr will be tatty for this money)!

With this sort of money any vehicle will be a bit of a gamble. best to buy priately and pay atention to service history and gut feeling

you will be lucky to find a car under a grand with service history that is up to date.The best place to spend that kind of money is either autotrader or a good auction with genuine p/x main agent unwanted cars.
