We all drive LHD cars so this means we use our left hand to do the vast majority of functions within our cars. Now through the law of averages most of us are right handed so are we altering the course of nature by using our left hand for these functions?

If evolution was to take it's course in 1000 years we'd all be ambidextrous? (in the UK at least)

To me personally I still find some difficulty using my left hand, this is why I prefer LHD over RHD.

We all drive LHD cars ....

Do we? Personally I've never driven one in 21 yrs of motoring.

I have to disagree. I've noticed that when I'm driving fine motor control of the steering wheel is done with my right hand. I've never had any difficulty reaching out and adjusting the radio / heating / changing gear, and I wouldn't have thought that such relatively clumsy tasks would have any impact on left or right handedness.

I found I could adapt to being left handed within 4 weeks after I broke my wrist, and in fact can still write neatly with my left hand over a year later. ;-)

I read somewhere that the widespread use the thumb instead of the index finger, as in using mobiles etc., could through evolution lead to the index finger becoming smaller and less sensitive.

I work as an illustrator which means I do very little with my left hand during working hours. A few years ago I took up playing the guitar to partly redress the balance!!

I read that RHD cars are safer than LHD for most people, as most people are right handed.
Therefore, their 'best' hand is used for car control in one handed situations such as gearchange or stick brake application.
Also, if a diver falls asleep at the the wheel, if they are right handed they tend to steer to the left (verge) and left handed steer to the right (oncoming traffic), thus as most people are right handed, there are fewer head on collisions as a result of this in a RHD country. Maybe it's time that left-handed people had an insurance premium hike? ;o)

Haven't you got this completely wrong?

I drive a RHD car and use my left hand for gearchange.

How would right handed steer to the left?

Unless having a sensitive thumb and less sensitive forefinger becomes beneficial to both the survival and breeding ability of individuals it will have no significant effect on natural selection.

We're not altering nature, we're isolating ourselves from it--humans are domestic animals now, just like cows and poodles, and most would not survive long in "the wild."

There is a misconception that merely by practising something, or ceasing to use some function, we can alter the course of evolution.
To alter humans by evolution it would be necessary for the changes described to either cause the advantaged people to breed faster, or the disadvantaged ones to die before they had been able to breed.
Maybe young men with quick gearchanges get to the girls faster.
Or possibly cars with central handbrakes and consoles inhibit reproduction.

I think people are pretty versatile. At one time I'd three motor bikes plus car and a push bike.
Several possibilities of left/right, up/down gear shifts on bikes.
Rarely made a mistake and never tried to declutch my push bike.
A LHD hir car in Spain a few years back - soon adapted.
