According to yesterday's Standard the next step is GPS based charging per mile via a "black box". Gave up trying to measure cycle mileages in London with my Garmin Etrex as it could rarely see four sattelites in streets of six/seven storey buildings.
Are vehicle specific GPS installations any better?

I am confident that a way will quickly be found to foul up the signal to/from a car GPS, if you want to! A bit of aluminium or lead foil wrapped round the aerial should be a good start!

They will probably use Tetra, GSM, GPS, ICTIS RFiD, all combined with Quickbird V satellite CCTV.
Sorry but there is no getting away from it.

The bit to worry about is the ability to log your speed, which is probably how they expect to pay for it all.

Yes, at least in some cases. Mine uses dead reckoning when is is not locked to any/enough satellites. I assume in has a gyro built in.

How about a £10 cycle computer? :-P

Computers are a bit of a pain on the Brompton. The wired sort are fiddly to set up without compromising the fold. Others report the wireless variety to be tempremental as well . And I only wanted a one off measure of the routes I ride and claim mileage for.

A thought o Brompton Rider. Howsabout an ancient veeder milometer. You would need to calculate the wheel circumference difference as I am sure the Veeders were only for 26" wheel. Some mathematical genius on here will be able to supply a formula.

ps Used to follow a Moulton through Smethwick and Handworth in the 80s/90s riding to work. Always felt sorry for him. The potholes could swallow the front half completely.:-))

You want one of those. Easy to set up, excellent range, and the wireless transmitter is pretty dinky.
