I have a mazda 323 1.6 gxi 02 plate.
Paid £5500 16 months ago and have no problems so far.
Car now requires a full service, 4 tyres and two front disks and pads.
I reckon service £200 tyres £200 frontdisks and pads £200
Thats £600.
Car is now worth say £4250 Should I spend £600 on jobs or put that £600 toward newer car and trade in or sell?
maybe might have to put in £1000 giving me roughtly £5200 to spend on new car.
Advice appreciated
thanks

Do you like the car and does it meet all your needs? If so, keep it, do the jobs, it will be money well spent and give you peace of mind for the next few years of service. Otherwise, if money is no object and you want/need a newer/different car, time to start shopping. Autotrader link on the left. <----

>>and pads £200
An awful lot just for pads. My advice is keep car and shop around for prices.

2 Front diskd and pads fitted .. £200
The question is I going to spend about £600 on it should I put that towards newer one?

All cars need servicing, so if you buy another are you going to go through the same debate when it comes up for it's first service in your ownership? If it's still what you want & need at the moment, then it's clear that the thing to do is just get the service done - and shop round as has been suggested. Or are you just looking for an excuse to change before you pass it through the finance committee ;-)

Ha Ha:)
Actualy its the wifes car and its still suits the purpose.
Advice here is to do the service and maintenance so I most likely will.
thanks all

With my old golf I used to buy the brake parts from VW myself and then get ATS to fit them. All said and done it used to work out about half price against VW doing the job. If you ring your local ATS or similar you'll find they happily fit owner supplied parts. Won't attract the same warranty on the parts but ho hum, who needs guaranteed pads? They wear out soon enough!

Your price for tyres is about right - other things are too high.
Delphi front discs for your car would be about £40 the pair. Pads, guessing, about £25-30. 1 hour labour at independent - £40?? That's £110 max.
Depends which service it is - assuming all filters + oil + plugs I would say no more than £60 parts plus labour of 1.5-2 hours. These are straightforward cars to work on. Buy a Mazda oil filter, but air and fuel filters could be branded aftermarket items.
Any car you replace it with will also require servicing! Better the devil you know, I think.

Perhaps the ashtrays are full as well? Car definitely needs changing if they are.

Wife had new front discs/pads on Mazda 2001 323F recently- only £60 or so from her little garage man. Think the service plus MOT plus above came to £160.

A2B, I don't know what you do for a living and therfore how much your time is worth to you, but if you did'nt mind getting your hands dirty and have a spare afternoon you could save a small fourtune, even after factoring the cost of a haynes manual and a basic set of tools. I know that for myself I am quids in doing the work myself, even if I were to take an unpaid day off work to fit it in.
Oil £10
Oil filter £3
Air filter £8
Pads £25
Discs £40
4 part worn tyres £60
------------------------
£146

The car appears to suit your requirments, so keep it...:-)
No matter which way you look at it, it's going to be a lot more expensive to change.
I know the grass is always greener etc but it's hardly an old model and you state it has been reliable.
A replacement might not be...:-)

I agree, keep the Mazda. If you try to sell, anyone looking to buy will want to chip the cost of the service items off your asking price, so you wouldn't be any better off anyway.
Some good advice here about how to save on the service costs.

I'd service it. As the others have said even if you change it unless the replacement comes with new tyres, disks and pads you'll have to do them sooner or later.
I'd expect to get at least 20,000 miles from new tyres, disks and pads, and even at £400 for the lot this still only works out a 2p per mile

If you really want to change, would suggest having serviced then selling privately. You can always leave the tyres as they are and leave this for the punter to haggle the price down.

Those Mazda 323 are great cars. I bought a new one in 99 and it has never given me any trouble what so ever. Still have it and intend to keep it indefinitely. Service it by the book and keep it till it starts giving trouble or you get tired of it. You won't get cheaper or more hassle free motoring with anything else other than perhaps another Mazda.

OK OK I'll keep it, just thought i would get a few views.
Oh By the way mapmaker, I dont smoke so no problem with the ashtrays however i did notice some dirt on the car at one point...
