when in fifth gear, stick pops out and goes back into neutral.
what is causing this? does it mean that the whole gear box is gone? or is it only a problem isolated to 5th gear?

Is it doing it straight away? Doesn't sound like it's engaging 5th properly. On mine, if you don't engage reverse solidly it will bang out of it when you move a foot or two.
Quite how that helps you I don't know but someone will be along soon to give more useful advice.

you dont say what car?so lets say its a renault/volvo yes they come out of gear because the nut holding the 5th gear comes undone.if you get it sorted now then it may be just a case of getting the nut locktighted back on,you really need to speak to a gearbox specialist in the morning who will advise. Go to a recommended by a friend one, there are loads of cowboy outfits about who know nothing about gearboxes but how to wash s/h dirty ones off and sell as recons

its whn you take your foot off the gas that it pops back into neutral.

Check linkage adjustment first. Then check engine and gearbox mounts (see if powertrain is rocking back and forth excessively). If not either of those then probably worn out synchro mechanism (detent spring etc).
|
|
If it pops out on power off it is 90% certain to be the detent.Had the same in fourth with mine,as I had a spare g/box I put that in.
