£5k family hatch? - MoneyMart
I've got £5k to spend on a large family size car (Vectra size minimum).

Must be diesel.

Preferably hatchback.

Will consider the "sexier" looking estates (Avant/spootwagon style) but no repmobile estates (Passat, mondeo style)

Want something with a bit of Kudos.

Want something that's not going to cost the earth to maintain.

Ideas?

If it weren't for that last bit about maintenance costs I'd say an Alfa 156 Sportwagon (I've fell in love with them for some reason lately). I guess the best 'Kudos' car at this level would be a BMW 3-series Touring or A4/A6 Avant...but they'd be old.

I must say I like the style of the Laguna, be it estate or hatch, as it's a handsome machine as well.

Well, how about a Subaru Imprezza 5-door 'estate'. Reliable but a bit oddball and not too dear.
