Saxo wheel lockup when braking - stevek
1998 1.4 saxo wth ABS locks the rear passengers side wheel on braking. There is then a knocking as the ABS works. It happens on soft and moderate braking only.
Any ideas appreciated.

Drums or disks on the rear? With the Bendix drum brakes fitted, there is a known problem of seizure of the handbrake lever pivots in the shoe webs. This causes the brakes to stick, usually after being parked with the handbrake on and I have seen the shoe linings shear off as a result of this. A quick, but not 100% reliable indication of this problem being present is if, when correctly adjusted, the handbrake lever is floppy rather than spring loaded at the beginning of its travel.

Buy new stub axle nuts and bearing closure plates, and take the whole lot apart, lubricating the star-ring retained pivots on these levers with copper loaded high temperature compound. Your vehicle is the right age for this problem to emerge.

as - 659FBE says but on this year i reckon you will find that it is still on original shoes and they now want changing, as its "when"not if that the shoe lining will come off, very dangerous.
Are you sure its got abs?never seen one?

Thanks for the advice.
Yes it has ABS. It was a demonstrator of the old model before the facelift in 1998 with the curved style headlights.

Does it have a rear brake balancer? if it does this would be a candidate.

if they do they are in the wheel cylinder,in which case a check up would show this as the pistons would be either leaking or seized.

Thank you all for your help. I will post the result after I have looked at the brakes in the morning.

The problem was leaking wheel cyclinder both sides. Leaking fluid combined with brake dust caused the brakes to grab.
New cylinders, shoes and a general clean up and all solved.
Once again thanks for all the helpful comments.
