As far as I know, the engine and gearbox are removed together and then separated when out of the car. Might also be worth replacing the clutch at the same time, especially if the clutch components are showing signs of wear or contamination.
The only hassle which I can think of would be changing the injection pumps over, as the bosch pump on the replacement engine will not be compatible with the immobilser system on your car. This was the case when I had an engine change in my 1994 306TD with a bosch pump, the replacement engine had a lucas pump and so the bosch pump was taken from the knackered engine and fitted to the replacement one- a lot of work so the guy said.
Definitely worth fitting a new cambelt to the new engine as well.
Good Luck

Mate,
they should just swap over no sweat....remove the gearbox as well... as already said...check/replace the clutch...do the Cam belt as well (it is alot easiler with the engine removed)
The bosch pump a garett turbo are better than the lucas, you can manually tweak them to gain more power...I did on my old 306DT, she smoked a bit but kept up and occassionally took a 110BHP Golf of my mates.....wow I miss that motor...swapped for a gas gussling S16...goes like hell, but only 300miles to a tank compared to 475/500mile from the DT (with the tweaked pump and turbo)
What blew on your old engine?
