Best Place To Buy Discs&Pads. Leon Cupra - Ben {P}
Our Leon Cupra requires all new discs and pads- where is the best place to buy them from? I live in Bromley. I want good quality, at the best prices.

www.buypartsby.com appears to offer good prices, but are Delphi and Mintex top quality suppliers? I have used Mintex in the past but have no experience with Delphi products.

I am considering using EBC greenstuff pads at the front, are there any reasons not to use these pads?

Thanks.

GSF or Euro car parts should do them as they are pretty much Golf items.

Delphi are a 'spin off' company from GM - they took over the Lockheed braking businesss - so yes, they are top-quality (better than some of the stuff I've had from GSF and ECP). Mintex are top-notch pads too.

I have just had pads and discs all round on my Passat, fitted by my local garage.
These are Apec brand, which I have never heard of.
Does anyone know if these are any good?

APEC = Automotive Parts and Equipment Co, I think they are based in Bristol. Fairly 'cheapie' stuff that most of the factors sell - seems OK though. I have used them in the past and, judging by the packaging, I think some of their stuff must be sourced from Slovakia, Slovenia etc. - but not entirely sure.

I tend to go for the well known stuff like Mintex (who also do discs BTW), Delphi, ATE etc etc.

Thanks Aprilia for your answer re Apec. I hate having cheapo parts on my car, this is the trouble with going to local garages. If I had gone to the main dealer I would have got the original spec parts.
It makes you wonder what is the best thing to do when repairs are needed, pay less and get poor quality, or pay top whack and get peace of mind.

Thanks Aprilia for your answer re Apec.

I'm sure if you ask your local garage they will fit whatever you request (inc. factory parts obtained from dealer). APEC are not bad though, and a popular brand, so don't worry too much about it.

Thanks again Aprilia for reasuring me re Apec. I am a real worrier!
I went for a longish drive yesterday and found the brakes much better than before.

Think I'll order them from buypartsby.com then and see how I get on. By my calculations, I should be able to get the whole lot delivered for £115 inc VAT.

EBC Pads I've put onto various cars and on all they've improved the braking slightly but far more importantly don't dump filthy brake dust over the wheels & what is there is easier to clean.
Oh and EBC are type 90 or whatever it's called so deemed OEM.
Otherwise Euro Car parts who've been good with Porsche bits, good pricing and delivery.

As a compromise between wear rate, pedal effort and disk scoring, I have found the Delphi (branded Lockheed) pads to be the best, closely followed by Mintex. The Delphi pads are generally lighter in colour, so the brake dust does not show so much on the wheels.

Ferodo (Federal Mogul?) are less good in all respects. The cheaper pads from GSF and the like are not as good as the Delphi - Jurid in particular giving rise to disk scoring and squeal when fitted to pre-GM SAABs fitted with Girling calipers. There have been no safety issues with any of these products.

Yes it is Bromley South London, and I know the motor factors in question. However, the prices I have been charged in there are never as cheap as the prices I have seen advertised on butpartsby.com
I think that may be because I dont get the proper trade price as I do not have an account. I have used the place a lot in the past- it appeared the more often I purchased there, the better the prices were. They do sell lots of lockhead brake parts, but last time I went in there to buy some rear discs for a mondeo they gave me a brand I had never heard of.

Hi Ben,
Try Partco - they are owned by Unipart (who I work for) and are a nationwide company selling to the trade and aftermarket. Top quality products at rock bottom prices. Try twisting their arm for a trade discount.

i have an account with partco(brown brothers) and to be honest this last 12 months their prices have gone silly, ive tried reasoning with the local branch and h/o but find it easier to just use them now as a last resort.

Have to agree, I went to them in Nottingham, it was deserted, no customers, noone serving, just people joking in the back office. Went out and slammed the door. In years gone buy there used to be both staff and customers inside.

Me too. Used Brown Brothers (Partco as are now) for donkeys years. Recently they have become a bit expensive and have some new young lads working for them who have an 'attitude problem' (i.e. taking the mick out of customers).

Also another local factor (CAS) tried to charge me more for a Nissan clutch cable than the main dealer wanted! You have to watch these guys. www.buypartsby.co.uk are as cheap as most factors, but then there is P&P - if its a reasonably large order they are good value though.

The only pads and discs i have ever fitted to my Leon are Brembo and zimmerman disks and pagid pads. They aren't cheap, but they are like tyres, something that I never compromise on - too important for that!!!

I buy them from GSF, sorry I cant recall the prices.

Eurocarparts and GSF usually have 2 or 3 possible makes/prices of brake parts, always go for the most expensive (which is usually only a few quid more) ad you are most likely to end up with OEM parts (eg PAGID or Brembo).

Micheldiver's down the M3 in Hampshire. HJ seems keen on them - get all my brake and tyre stuff done there - they really know what they are doing and prices are soooo much better than anywhere else. Phone up and make an appt so they have the parts in stock and they do it while you wait.

Their website and details are at www.micheldever.co.uk

Cheers, Yoby
