how many brands have you driven - nutty_nissan
I was bored the other day, and decided to recall all the different brands I had ever driven (whether as a test drive or owned or a friend's car).

14 was my final count in 15 years of motoring. Are there people out there who have only ever driven the same brand their entire life?

how many brands have you driven - Avant
If you include test drives, in 40 years I think I've driven every brand in mass production (i.e. excluding what I'd call the specialists such as RR, Morgan and Caterham) apart from the slightly odd combination of Alfa Romeo, Hyundai, Kia and Daewoo.

I'm not sure what the first-named has in common with the other three except that I've never wanted one enough to go for a test
drive.
how many brands have you driven - Avant
Oh yes and I can remember Fordsons - long ago they badged lorries and even the 8 hp van Fordson as well as the tractors. I've no idea why - maybe someone out there can enlighten us?

I shall start with an Ariel and a Noble.

I drove one around castle combe a few years back - fantastic little things, but I managed to miss a gear and create a lot of noise just as I went past my mate with the camcorder. Something I will no doubt be able to forget
how many brands have you driven - Chicken Madras
Did the same at Thruxton and had a great time. Before I went, a friend gave me some good advice. Remember that they're not your brakes and tyres and drive it hard. After I'd stopped braking at my "normal" distance and started throwing it into corners etc, it was difficult to get my crash hat off afterwards due to the very large grin I was wearing.
how few brands owned - henry k
Over many years I have owned just 5 x Fords and by a big default, a Triumph 2000 auto, for a couple of years.
Most of the rest I have driven were hire cars or friends cars.
Rarest I guess was a Jaguar XJ12C, IIRC one of only 316 produced.
how few brands owned - Xileno {P}
Only owned Renaults, VW's and a Peugeot.
how many brands have you driven - Dynamic Dave
I've driven the usual run of the mill manufacturers cars (eg, Ford, Vauxhall, Rover, Peugeot, Citroen, VW - etc. (used to drive a varied amount of hire cars back in the late 80's for business purposes)

Oh, and not forgetting a Lamborghini..... (shame it was only a tractor though)

Talking of tractors, I see Fordson mentioned earlier. Driven one of them, as well as a David Brown, a John Deere, and a Massey Ferguson.

nodwell and probably lots of others I cant remember along with all the usual range of cars from the last 40 years

My mention of a Fordson wasn't a tractor Dave but a truck. An old Army three tonner to be exact. But if I had put a tractor in it would have been a Zetor.

Simple really, Papa RF (oops TVM) was a mainline train driver at Stratford. Rostered to drive the Norwich express out of Liverpool St, MAMA TVM pops the young TVM up onto the footplate just before the great beast leaves.

The last of the Britannias left Stratford shortly afterwards to do service further up the East Coast.

If you?re allowed to have that one RF then I?m having the Deltic locomotive I drove (with my dad) in a shunting yard somewhere in Manchester, I was much younger than you, maybe five, and I was very scared and I was crying. Papa was an engineer though not a driver, he started in the engine rooms of merchant navy ships so if I?d gone to work with him when I was two I could have been piloting some old Liberty ship down the Manchester Ship Canal. Never happened though, sadly.

>>Ford GT40 (DWC 8 G, silver roadqoing prototype still owned by Ford)

Wandering off topic, I mentioned above that I had been lucky enough to RIDE some distance in the above car (in France a few years ago, have video 'footage' of central speedo nudging 140 mph).

I see it features in the latest (Feb) issue of Car magazine (pages 116-120) in a comparison with the new 'tribute model' Ford GT supercar. DWC 8 G has now been painted white instead of silver.

I also saw this car drive past my house when I was a boy, around 1971 - I was standing on the pavement with a friend and I remember we thought it was a Ferrari as it approached, until it got close. It was silver then too.

Just realised I hit 25 years of driving in 05.

So, in order of ownership/stewardship:

DAF 55 - incredible acceleration and marvellous at traffic light grandprixs.
Vauxhall Chevette GLS hatch - nice velour seats and fully carpeted load area including the back of the rear seat back - best not go into details. Sadly demonstrated the impact-absorbing qualities of the droopsnoot, but hey, I was young.
VW Polo "breadvan".
MG Metro.
VW Polo saloon (my excuse was that it looked like a small Audi).
Ford Escort(s).
Ford Mondeo.
Volvo 340 1.7.
Volvo 340 Variomatic - so misunderstood by the "experts".
Rover 100.
Renault Clio II.
DAF 33 - still got it. Still belts along. Looks so sweet.
Vauxhall Vectra.
SEAT Toledo - first diesel car and now I know I want to go back diesel.
MG ZTT - Well I like it and it's such a shame about MGR.
