In my time as an ´animateur´ on a French campsite I used to wind up the Fench by calling the wrong département to the number that dropped. Oh happy days.
I worked with an English guy who had memorised them all, which I found rather sad.
Same system here for registration, any move away from your regional DVLA ( in my case, Frankfurt) would entail re-registering your vehicle(s), joy of joys. At your own expense of course.

Hopefully the new French registration system will be at least as silly as our 05, 55 etc. one is!
