Disposing of an old bumper? - r_welfare
Evening all.

I spent most of this morning changing the front bumper on an old Vauxhall Belmont I acquired recently - the original had a fist-sized hole in the corner which couldn't easily be repaired.

So, now I have the old bumper taking up space in the garage. But I'm in a quandary. Can you take something like this to your local tip, or does it need to go to a scrapyard?

At my local tip there is a little area to the side where you can leave old things (TVs, furniture etc) which may have some value or use to others - when changing an interior or wheels I have often left the old seats or wheels and tyres here. But given this bumper is effectively scrap, it may not be appropriate.

Can anyone offer any advice from their experiences?

Thanks
Richard

Local tip should if it is a recycle centre, have a skip labeled any type of rubbish. But even if it has not they will still take it.

or jigsaw it up and put in your bin at home.

Thanks Steve. I've got some old engine oil to recycle - they have one of those big bins for it at the tip - so will bung the bumper in the back and take it up there as well.

Just wondered if I was going to get shouted at by the Men With Dayglo Jackets that staff the place if I did take it up there.

Plastics recycling is well established and, in fact, larger products often have the type of plastics used to produce them stamped on to facilitate easy recyling.

I would burn it.
Due to EU WEEE directive, you can no longer take them to the tip/recycling centre, that goes for any other car parts, brake discs, tyres, exhausts etc... they will go berserk if they see you as they are rarely if ever registered to take these items. The exception is motor oil and lead acid batteries which are specifically registered items.

Steve, you're right. Burning them is a very bad idea. Last year, I made a bonfire of beach debris, and included a piece of bumper I'd found on the beach -- yukk! It belched out foul black smoke.

Due to EU WEEE directive

Isn't WEEE the Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment?

What's wrong with chucking old metal parts into the scrap metal bin? The bumper shouldn't be any different, there is a plastic bottle recycling scheme at my local tip, OK so it's not a bottle but I'm sure they won't say no.

The only alternative is to do what steve.o say, but aren't these EU directives supposed to be helping the environment?

My local refuse centre took mine. Not sure if they didn't see it, but I?m sure I asked "which skip does this go in?", so if they weren?t going to take it, they would have said.

Actually, many years ago, I saw the remnants of a MK1 Fiesta in one of the skips. Had been carefully cut into little cubes. It had no engine or tires, but everything else was there.

Find a skip on the side of the road, and providing there's room amongst the odd matteress, old doors and the like, put it in there when the renter of the skip isn't looking.

Don't do this, I'm sure this was meant as a toung in cheek remark.

>>Find a skip on the side of the road,

I did hire a skip some years ago,got annoyed by the fact some other cretins had filled it up overnight..took me 2 weeks to replace the skip that I paid for and others used,I`m sure you would be annoyed as well.*SO* dont do it!!.

Blimey! Some interesting feedback here.

Well, I'll try and take it up to the tip on Monday - but if they're not happy with it, I'll chop it up with a jigsaw, then take it up with the other Xmas rubbish.

Phone your local Enviromental Health Dept (Refuse) ask them for advice, have the recycle codes available, they might even pick it up for free to avoid the someone else's skip/burning/cave option

Agree with steveo, this happended to us once. Really annoying, we paid for it and some other swines filled it up. Gits.

Haven't seen a skip at the side of the road for donkeys round my way (Newbury) - I'm not a fly-tipper so worries there.

I saw a man at the Local Community Household Waste and Recycling Centre (tip) in an Omega take 3 sections of exhaust out of his boot, immediately 3 vagabonds in dayglo vests came rushing out of a hut shouting NO! They told him they couldn't take car parts anymore becuase of EU waste rules they had to go to registered vehicle waste centres such as breakers yards. Sorry, but we'd lose our lisence etc...

IIRC the same rule made a lot of car breakers pack it in.

I think this is a misapplication of the rules,a car has to have its fluids removed but why,for example, would a bonnet be any different from some other piece of scrap sheet steel?I have not had probs getting rid of car parts, including a bumper at the start of the year.It would not have been recyclable as the shell was filled with foam.

I too have had no problems getting rid of several Sierra bumpers at my local tip.
In case you are wondering, I replaced several friends Sierras bumpers as they were so cheap at the breakers.

Oh how I wish my Mondeos bumpers were foam filled like the Sierras, rather than the terrible thin air filled shells that split so so easily.
At least I could cut up and pop it in a little pedal bin bag rather than visit the tip.

Had a skip at PU Towers last summer. Well hidden it didn't attract any dumpers. Mind you I did catch my JCB driver fishing stuff out for a car boot sale, mind you makes more room for my own rubbish !

Have a look at this site to see what they do to old parts, a lot of it is now recycled or the fluids are drained before dismantling.
