...all those crushed up cars you see on the back of lorries?

They can't be landfilled surely?

What happens to... - Hamsafar
They are melted down and made into trash cans and license plates!

Shredded, then melted down. A horrible way to go.

Just a bit!

Plastics as well? Very 'eco friendly' I'm sure...

Strictly the plastics should be removed before shredding. They probably are in most of Europe. However its probably easier just to put the whole lot in the shredder!

Sounds about right! Well that answers that question, cheers guys.

Those things must have some power to a whole car!

The shredding machine seperates the plastic from the metal. They can also shred large RSJ's and whole rail tracks.

by the time the scrappies have had what they want, not much left anyway just a shell.I think also but may be wrong, scrap yards have to strip the car of oil/fuel/plastics before going to main yard to be sold and compacted.

So your '87 Montego comes back as an '05 Avensis!

Or, in the case of the Ssang Yong Rodius, they just use the panels from other cars without melting them down first!!

Weren´t Fiats/Alfas in the ´good old days´ made from cheap Russian steel? Something to do with the Lada deal to use Fiat designs?

Never quite sure of the rationale behind "recycling". Always seems to me the fossil fuels and other resources used to gather, ship, process and redistribute the stuff is WAY more than just leaving it be, especially if it gets shipped all the way to China!
