Hi all,
My Leon is in the classifieds at the moment (2003/53 Cupra, 45k, silver), and while I wasn't expecting a flood of enquiries from here, there has been no contact from my ad on the autotrader website (nearly a week now). It's up on AT for £9500. Is this vastly above book? It's comparible with the other Cupras on the AT site, cheaper than some. Is it just us over-ambitious Cupra owners, or is it generally a slow time? Any tips? I'm not desperate to sell, but I realise that the more time that passes, the less I'll get, and I'm hoping to buy a classic with the proceeds before the prices for these pick up again.
TIA,
Alex.

A recent thread discussed how auction prices are depressed at the moment so I guess it is not a good time. Not many will be considering changing their car this close to Christmas.
Good luck anyway!

Trade in prices according top Glass's
Part-exchange Price:
Excellent condition: £7740
Average condition: £6970
Below average condition: £6250
Might explain the interest or lack of.

Market's flat, it's over priced and the mileage is quite high for its age.
7K and it should go.

Ok, so here's a question: should I drop the price now & take advantage of a cheap classic (probe MGB GT), or wait until after crimbo and wait for trade to pick up (I assume it will & I'm more likely to get a better price)?
TIA,
Alex.

Buy your new car now, sell the old one after Christmas when prices pick up.

I would have thought that if you leave it until after christmas then it just becomes a year older so any pick up in the market is ofset. Most people will look at the year of registration against the year they are in to asses how old a car is.

Update: the Leon is being picked up tomorrow, sold for £8,500. A good price for an excellent car, I'm well chuffed (given the time of year).
As some of you may remember, I will be buying a classic at some point, but don't want to rush into it. I do, however, need a car, in particular to get to and from my gf's place (ideally over xmas!). I'm thinking of picking up a banger to tide me over, provide transport over xmas, to view classics etc. Could do with being big, as I need to clear the garage to keep the classic in.
I rather fancy an old Volvo estate (760 ideally) for sub £500. Any thoughts re sense of this/ other candidates? I want something cheap that won't go horribly wrong on me, but with a modicom of comfort! The Volvo is so unfashionable, it's kind of cool (I think!) Always a chance that I may buy a silly, small classic (ie Midget), and hang onto the banger...
Thanks in advance,
Alex.

An old Volvo or Ford Estate would do you fine as a stop-gap car, as both are unfashionable enough to be extremely cheap for their age.
I suspect you could get a very tidy early Mondeo Estate on ebay for under £500, with plenty to choose from. I would suggest you get onto ebay, do an advanced search within 10-20 miles of you, less than £500, then go and view the car in person before the end of the auction. That way there's no more risk involved than there would be using autotrader.

I've just bought a Saab 900 - 1994 Convertible. It didn't cost a very great deal more than what you want to pay. Whilst I was looking for one, it struck me how incredibly cheap these old Saabs are. £500 would easily get you a 94- hatchback with a pretty huge boot, or maybe even a -94 classic shape light pressure turbo. If you're after something slightly "different" it might fit the bill - just a thought.
