Personally I would go for replacement at 5 years or 60k miles.

I have often wondered what those in the trade recommend.
Having upgraded from old Sierra to a Mondeo - now got a drive belt not a fan belt so it is obviously more complex to swop.
So I am new to the situation.
My sons Focus is at £50K and 5 years. It has been serviced by a Ford main dealer who I think does a good job.
I have noticed a small line of black deposit / dust appearing in front of the bulhead on the outside of one of the reservoirs. This appears to be in line with the drive belt. Is this an early warning of belt wear? I cannot deduce where else such a deposit can be coming from.
The smooth side of the belt does appear quite shiny.

If you remove belt covers then you will often find fine black powder inside - not necessarily a worry.
It is virtually impossible to judge belt condition 'in situ' unless it has nicks and cracks in it - in which case change it ASAP and be thankful it hasn't snapped. I have removed belts which looked perfect, but when you double them back you see cracks at the teeth roots.
I would say don't leave a belt more than 5 years on account of the rubber aging. Mileage is dependent on the configuration - where a belt does more 'work' (i.e. driving four cams and a waterpump) then they tend to wear out quicker. Follow makers guidelines.

Thanks for your instant reply.
Both vehicles have PAS and A/C but each belt is quite wide.
No replacement details in Haynes just annual /10K visual checks
but as you state this is not easy / possible in situ.
I will check both owners manuals in the morning.
I will have a closer look at them but will get them changed.

Henry k, the visible belts are the auxiliaries, NOT the cam or 'toothed' belt VW refer to. Get it changed along with its tensioner ASAP.

The schedule is correct. Check and replace *if necessary* is what they say. How you determine belt condition baffles me. Belts often look OK until you removed them and double them back - then they show cracks at the root of the teeth. Personally I would go for replacement at 5 years or 60k miles.
thanks good advice I think I'll take it
