Mondeo TDCi air rush noise.... - keef
My Mondeo TDCi 130 was bought new from Trade Sales in 2003 and since then I've had no probs. Recently I've started hearing a blowing noise from the driver footwell position and the car seems to have less power than normal. A few people have suggested horror causes like the Cats fallen aprt etc. Anyone come across this? I took the underpan off this evening and had a good look round but couldn't see anything wrong.

The other really bizzare thing is when I was looking round at stuff I took the front grill off to see the pipes going into the intercooler and there is a metal tube / beam that goes right across the front. I think this is a crash beam or something. Anyway there is a massive dent in it which pushes it back so it is just touching the intercooler and to me it looks like the car was driven into a post or something. Yet the plastic bumper and grill in front of this are perfect and I have never damaged the car in any way. I guess I wonder if this damage was done before buying it in 2003 and somehow covered up. Does this kind of thing happen in this day and age??

Most modern cars have a steel armature (bumper beam) within the plastic bumper to provide the necessary strength in an accident.

It sounds as though your Mondeo has been repaired on the cheap - just replacing the visibly damaged parts.

It happens because the cowboys are still out there, working on modern cars!

I'm really showing my ignorance here, but I am interested, as my car is a TDCi 130. Do diesels have catalytic converters ?

Well the air rush noise turned out to be a split turbo hose thank god! which was actually repaired under warrantry, despite the main warrantry running out last year?

The Ford Dealer couldn't understand how the crash beam was bent and agreed with me that the supplier must have had a hand in it. So I'll be writing to Trade Sales shortyl and let you know what happens.

Thanks for the replies

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that it was damaged and repaired in the factory (I used to work in a car factory), or while being delivered, and then diverted to Trades Sales because of the repair.

I think there must be some form of "known problem" with turbo hoses on the TDCI. One day mine suddenly started driving and sounding like a tractor . Despite being somewhere over 3 years old I was told the fix ( a turbo hose had fallen/blown off) would be covered under warranty. A similar fault occurred on a collegues car when his was rather younger.

I would take a softly softly approach with Trade Sales, as I think they would be genuinely unaware of this, and are usually quite affable about things. Trade Sales get the vast majority of their nearly-new stock from the hire-car fraternity, and they should probably be the ones to blame, so you'd need to get TS on your side to do this.

Yes most (if not all?) modern diesels are fitted with cats. But the MoT emissions test for diesels currently only tests for smoke, not for HC and NOx. Some people have removed their cat and get better throttle response, smoother running, and better economy and it still passes the MoT.

Thanks for all the replies. Just one addendum, the Ford decided that the turbo hose was not covered by warrantry after all to I had to pay £60 for the repair. Sour grapes from me? no 'cos I was just so relieved it wasn't anything worse and to their credit they did the job with no fuss whatsoever.

I'm going to take some pics of the damage and send it to TSL and see what they say. I guess this is so un-provable that I totally agree with the softly softly approach to try to win them over. Well I'll let you all know what happens.

Thanks for the info about Cats. I had always thought they were for petrol engines, so I've learnt something today.
