Thread on the technical got me thinking.
The perpetual advance (?) from hex driver to hex with a hole, then torx, then as torx but with 3 or 5 points.
Why do they do it?
My guess is that the industries involved are in cahoots with each other on this one to keep on generating business as ultimately for whatever bolt head someone comes up with, someone else will sell a driver for it.
What next?? Wire-locking and security seals?

It's also an attempt to stop you and me tinkering! Our Dyson developed a fault and I needed to get inside it, but they use torx screws with a pin in the centre, so you need a torx set with a hole in the bit - a quick visit to Maplins and I was away.

If you wedge a centre punch between the pin and the recess in the head and give it a bash with a hammer then the pin will break off. I've found that it works every time.

ditto it snaps out very cleanly
