How am I driving? - Round The Bend
I followed a lorry with one of these signs on the back this morning and wondered if anyone has phoned the number provided to comment on the driver's (lack of) ability. What were the results?

???????????????????
Time to get on with some work ???

As one who works for an employer who uses these signs, it has been known to result in a written warning and an instruction to call the complainant and apologise personally.

As one who phoned to complain about the van who had just run me off the road, it resulted in a response of "yeah, and so what?".

Depends on the company.

Twice. Firstly to say how well it was being driven - dealing with some extremely dangerous driving by a prat - for which I received a rather surprised thanks. Secondly for a lorry loaded with scrap cars which tried to run me off the road and then cutting up other cars while I hung well back - the company had sold the lorry at auction some months ago and the plate had not been removed.

It really depends on the scheme. The "Hows My Driving" was originally a national scheme that went through to a central call ctr, and then the company whose vehicle it was was informed, so you never really spoke to the actual company who owned the vehicle. Some of the other ones are run in house. The company I was a transport manager for had an in house system, calls went through to our fleet department and then passed onto the branch transport manager for that vehicle and driver, I than had to conduct an investigation by asking both parties for their version of events and had to supply a written report on my findings. If the driver was guilty of dangerous behaviour or just misconduct then I could disciplin them as I saw fit. If it was just poor driving then I would have to give them an assesment drive and if necessary put them forward for training.

So sometimes the complaints are taken seriously, I always used to take them very seriously and my drivers knew it, there was nothing they hated more then to have me sat with them for half or even a full day for an "Assesment drive" as it meant all their little shortcuts of the job were found out (like I didn't know them anyway!!!) ;o)

Some time ago I saw a sign scrawled in the grime on the back of a van. "Badly driven ? call this number" followed by a mobile phone number - probably the drivers, put there by a humourous workmate.

I saw a printed note on a van that said "If this van is being well driven, please report as stolen".

Cheered my day up.

I experienced and viewed some very bad driving, over many miles, by a lorry driver a few months back.
I looked up the company on the web and contacted the transport manager. He was most responsive and offered to call back with the outcome. I left things in his hands.

Re contacting companies.
I find it most odd that companies consider it worth while sign writing the company vehicles to, I guess, publicise themselves but often do not give any indication of what part of the country they are based in or area they operate.

This significant international company had a name and a pretty logo but no real indication what they did or a phone number, hence resorting to the web to find a contact.

I've done it, even with company vehicles not inviting such contact. The reception has been welcoming and serious every time. Sometimes, no doubt, it will get no further, but if you don't make an effort they will never know.

Any responsible company is going to take such reports very seriously, if only on the grounds that if one person is motivated strongly enough to make contact then there will be 99 others who made the same observation but not the same effort -- such is life. Bad driving puts expensive company assets at risk.

I'm considering whether it's worth reporting the driver who followed me through the Dartford tunnel half a car's length from by bumper before performing a dangerous overtake on the slip to M25/J31 last Sunday.

Roger's experience v encouraging!!!

I reported an artic driver once because he took exception to me stopping at roadworks when the traffic lights changed to red He hooted and was shouting and swearing. Being in my car, when the lights changed to green I managed to get to the top of the hill ahead long before him and park in a layby. As the lorry passed I got his number, the name of his company and its phone no. and phoned them when I got home!

Cheers, SS

I heard this story 3rd hand from the chap who sold me my old Morris Oxford.

A coach Driver friend of his who operated a one man one coach business received a call from a cyclist informing him that "one of his coaches" had actually knocked him off his bike.

Since he was the only driver of the only coach he owned, he thought back quickly and rmembered the "incident" He hd passed that cylist earlier that day but had given him plenty of clearence when overtaking him, so he could'nt work out what the problem was.

The subsequent conversation went something like this:

Coach Driver "Fine, thanks for telling me. As soon as the driver comes into work tomorrow I'll sack him."
Cyclist "Oh no that's not necessary I just need insurance details."
Coach Driver "No, first thing tomorrow he gets his cards. I can't have him on my payroll if he goes around knocking cyclists down."
Cyclist, "erm well he didn't knock me down so much as pass close to me and the wind... erm made me wobble and erm..."
Coach Driver "I don't care - first thing tomorrow, he's history. So what if he's got a family, I can't afford to be sympathetic where safety's concerned."
Cyclist "Look, that's really not necessary, he didn't hit me and he may not have realised he passed me too closely. Look, lets just forget I phoned OK?"

Kind or related - about dealing with customer feedback..
A few years ago I was running a course in an expensive hotel near Heathrow where the service, day after day, and after comment, was terrible.
When I finally had enough- and to pacify some angry course members- I asked to see the manager and told him my issues. He said how sorry he was, and while I was there called in in the banqeting guy , told him off and then sacked him.
I was mortified ; I said that wasn't necessary, but the manager said it was , as the "customer counts". My collegues were also upset, and we didnt complain any more that week.
About six months later I met another trainer, who as it happens, had used the same hotel only a week or so before and was commenting on how poor the service had been. He went on to say though, that when he complained to the manager , the banqueting manager ( yes you've got it) was called in and fired, and now he felt very guilty about what he had done..and yes the descriptions of the managers matched.

I used to be a field service engineer for a local computer firm. We had about 10 guys on the road most days, and would occasionally receive a call from an irate motorist who had been cut up, or treated in an aggressive manner.

The standard reply was to tell them that we'd had lots of complaints about that driver and that he was no longer with the company.

No-one ever got sacked or even told off to my knowledge.

Erm,

The only time I ever phoned the Polis regarding another driver was as a result of observing a toe-rag=scally overtaking myself and a row of cars in front of me , all on a long fast sweeping bend. Potentially lethal.

So I phoned the Polis and explained in a somewhat aplogetic fashion as to what had happened.

Polis took all details incl my ph no, I then got a Ph call from a very cheerful Plod who said.

Yep he is a toe-rag( or words to that effect) we know him troo well.,

I think we will leave it to about 04:00 Hrs before we knock on his door, to persue our enquiries

tee hee.
