Why does it sound like the tappets are rattling at any engine speed? 10k on the clock and I don't think it even has tappets!

Check the oil level first.

Oil level ok.Doesn't use any oil and has been serviced by main dealer on time and within mileage.

My sisters Clio (same as the one you mention) had quite audible valve gear, which seemed to get progressively worse. I put it down to the fact the oil needed changing. Those long service intervals probably aren?t that good, because it depends upon how you use your car. 18000 miles services are only any good for those that do primarily motorway driving. My point may have been proven, when after the next service, the noise was pretty much gone.

18K oil change? No none of that. The Renault manual states that if you do a lot of short journeys or urban use, then it should be changed more often (or words to that effect)

The 1.2 suffers from this problem. It seems even worse when its cold.
Best idea is to change the oil for new stuff.
